Hi all! Newbie here. I just bought my first Woo in early November, a 2000 Leganza. The fellow that sold it to me was driving it on a 600 mile trip, got 100 miles from his destination and the thermostat stuck. Engine started getting warmer than usual so he stopped a couple of times to let her cool down. He decided that he was going to do more harm than good and pulled it over and had it towed. He took it to a goodyear service center somewhere in Sherman, TX and they did some test that I'm not familiar with. I don't know if this story is legit or not so I'll share with you all to see if it's a truth or fiction. They told him he had a slow head gasket leak that only reared it's ugly head after a five minute warm up period. They told him they added a chemical to the coolant, used a "sniffer" at the exhaust (or a probe of sorts), and that it must be a slow head gasket leak or one that required the engine to get warm before the leak began occurring. Apparently they were saying that it took 5 minutes before the chemical they put in the coolant began showing up in the exhaust of the vehicle.
Regardless... this made his decision to get rid of the car an easy one. I picked up the car for a song knowing full well that the head gasket likely needed to be replaced and worst case... some head work as well. Went and picked up the car with a uhaul tow dolly and brought it home. To my surprise the car started and ran long enough to get it on the dolly and knowing the head gasket likely was leaking I only ran it long enough to get it on the dolly and long enough to get it off (max of 3 or 4 minutes) I put the car in my yard and just today found time in my schedule to do any serious looking around under the hood. The oil is pure. No water there. The coolant is pure. No oil there. The battery was dead so I charged it for a couple of hours, put it back in and then to my dismay tried unsuccessfully to start the car. It will crank all day long but won't fire up. I pulled the plugs and they don't look new but are far from fouled out. When you crank for a min or so you start smelling gasoline so I'm pretty sure I'm getting fuel. I'm not sure about spark. Anyone got any advice for me on where to start? Like I said, this car started fine a few weeks ago. It's been locked since I brought it home. I'm full aware that it probably needs a new head gasket but am wondering why it won't start for me now.
Any and all input is welcome!

according to the service manual for cranking with no start, the procedure for testing is:
check diagnostics for any codes;
compression test (all cylinders above 100 psi);
timing belt alignment/damage;
internal damage;
fuel pump fuse;
spark present;
ignition wires resistance >30 000 ohms;
CPS and connectors;
DIS and connectors;
ECM voltage;
Fuel pump;
Fuel Filter;
All injectors working...
Basically, an engine needs spark, fuel and air and all the sensors.
Good luck, hopefully it's something simple

Thanks man! Just got a set of service manuals. I'll brief everyone when I figure it out!

Ok after some hours under the hood... I finally got the head gasket swapped on this thing. The non-starting issue ended up being the coil. Bought a new one off ebay and she fired right up! Also found a used alternator at the local U-Pull-It lot which looked nearly brand new or recently rebuilt and she's running awesome!
Only problem I'm having now is a knocking noise in the front right corner of the car. It only seems to happen if I hit small bumps or dips in the road. It's the cv axle I believe, but it's not the cv joint itself. There's about a 16th inch of play in the shaft. Isn't this supposed to be tight fitting? Please forgive me if this is in the wrong area of the forum. I'm in a hurry.

Re: 2000 Leganza cranks but won't start
if the noise is generated with bumps then it is either the tie rod ends or a corroded caliper rods
you will be able to feel the play in tie rod ends if you hold it in your palm and have a friend continuously flick the the steering wheel... caliper rods are easily detected if you try to move the caliper assembly and found too much play

If you are only getting the noise when you go over a bump, you may have something loose with the brakes. If you can safely do so, if you go over a small bump that would ordinarily make the noise, then go over the bump as you hit the brakes. If you don't get the noise you know it's probably a caliper or pads. I had a vehicle one time with this problem and it was the brakes.... an easy and inexpensive fix. Just another idea.......
