Holden Barina - F16D3 Engine
Greetings from New Zealand.
The Holden Barina in N.Z. is a Korean Daewoo with the F16D3 engine.
This car is owned by a friend, and it has developed a fault with Check Engine light coming on. The handbook says it is an ECS fault. We have not had it scanned yet
The car is manufactured in 2006, and has 99000km.
There is a lot of oil on top of the engine, leaking down into the spark plug towers.
It is also time to do the Cam belt.
I am hoping that the topic "How to: Timing belt replacement on a 1.6 !6 valve DOHC, has the correct procedure for the car I am talking about.
I am happy to receive any advice and tips.
Could someone also comment on the reliability of these cars. I have read some very critical reports about the engines and I am hoping they are wrong.
Things like broken camshafts, and other very expensive repairs due to the failure of the catalytic converter.

Hi,
Try to have a good impact wrench for removing the crankshaft pulley screw.
Use some "blue sealant" on the new cam cover gasket.
I Think that timing job on 1.6DOHC is due every 4 years or 60.000km with a inspection every 30.000km.
At 99.000km change the water pump too, lucky man.
If scheduled maintenance is done with quality parts/fluids Daewoo cars are reliable. Their bad reputation is IMHO coming from the fact that some owners don't want/can put the maintenance costs on a relatively low priced car.

That is is it any different in the Engine I have in the car the F16D3.
My local garage repairman, who will do the job says that he usually does the water pump at around 180000km, at the time of the second cam belt change.
However, he asked if these cars have a need for the water pump to be changed earlier, are they susceptible to failing sooner.
And can he/we do the job without the special tool for (adjusting the belt,) listed in the procedure listed above.

That's the good procedure posted by MM.Can one of you helpful guys confirm that the procedure for timing the cam belt is the same as in the How to procedure I have refered to above.
Maybe position of PS pump differs. You should post a pic of your engine.That is is it any different in the Engine I have in the car the F16D3.
I recommend you to change water pump at the same time because it's quite cheap and about 95% of the job is already done. BTW scheduled T-belt job has changed over time from 90.000km to 60.000km. It's doable whith a thin channel lock pliers depending maybe of rear belt cover layout.And can he/we do the job without the special tool for (adjusting the belt,) listed in the procedure listed above.

i change my T belt every 40K kms and my tensioner and water pump at 80K kms... it is better to be safe than sorry
and yes... them cars are very reliable as long as you are maintaining them properly

any car is as reliable as the next with proper maintenance...
yes some cars do have problems with wiring that destroys itself, but i reckon that has more to with proximity to heat sources or leaking oil/other fluids

You are very helpful to a guy who is completely ignorant about these cars, but not ignorant about other cars.
I do do my own ecu tuning and all my own maintenance on my cars, including my own gearbox rebuild on my campervan.
The friend whose car I help look after is not cash rich.
Can anyone suggest where I would find a maintenance manual that covers ECS, plug gap and other maintenance.
I should check to see if there is a HAYNES or similar.
