Timing Belt Replacement Cost

My dealer wants $600 for the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and all labor on my 2001 Lanos.

Sounds liks a lot, bit I have nothing to compare it to.

What have others paid for the same work???

i paid 175 for a belt and labor. the waterpump prolly adds a lot to labor, but that does seem very high

for $600 i can swap in a 1.6 DOHC instead of my 1.5 SOHC... i know it is USA but still this is too much to ask for labour and parts.

I was quoted over 300 bucks alone on parts, just for belt, tensioner, and a cam sensor ($44.99). So that really doesnt sound too far off. It's definately crap though.

What portion of that is parts? i would bet atleast 65% of that is.

I would ask them to only charge retail on parts, if they're not already. You can verify retail prices at www.daewoous.com. This isnt unreasonable because they get the parts for less than that. Then figure out what they're charging for labor.

How long should it take the dealer to install all of this? I'm guessing the labor rate is in the region of $65 per hour, so about 5 hours would be built into a $600 quote.

my mechanic does this in some 2-3 hours... no idea why does it take so long in the dealership.

it takes so long at the dealership b/c they have a book taht tells them how long its supposed to take to change one. even if they can do it in half the time they have to charge you what the book says. which is bullshit by the way.

Yeah but sometimes there could be a problem and it could end up taking much longer than the book says.

I was quoted $650 for the job at the dealership in my area for my 2000 Lanos.

Lowest I've been able to find so far from just calling shops from the phonebook is $375.

The belt alone costs around $50.00
the tensioners are $130.00 for the pair
the water pump runs around $140.00 or so
Then, its a royal pain to work on the timing belt, I even had to remove thealternator and it's support to get a wrench on the water pump, then again I am not a mechanics

Actually, you can get a Timing belt kit with the belt, tensioner, and idler pulley for like $70.00 off of Ebay. Tom can even sell you a very high quality Opel OEM Gates timing belt kit for less than $180. Even the water pump costs less than $60 from the dealer. If you ended up paying more than maybe $190 for parts (Less if you use the Ebay kit) you got ripped off. So even at $200 for parts, that leaves $400 for labor, which equates to about 6 hours of work. I don't think the timing job takes half of that for a qualified mechanic.
