Big issues w/ my 2000 Lanos 1.6L
Let me start by saying my car has been sitting for about 3 weeks. It apparently has a serious issue now and I do not know where to begin troubleshooting it.
I guess I will start at the beginning. About a month ago I noticed that oil was getting all over everything. It appears to be mostly comming from the oil fill cap, which I know needs to be replace. So I took off the plastic cover over the valve cover and the timing cover and cleaned everything up including the timing belt. I was hoping the cleanup would be ok until I found a oil fill cap. Well about a week after this is when things went downhill fast. My fiance was comming home one night at about 1 in the morning and the car completely died. I pulled the car home and tried to look at it for a couple of hours. It will crank sometimes, but when it does it is like it is running on one or two cylinders. And if I give it any kind of gas it will die right away. Just one time after I took the breater off and cleaned everything up, it ran good for about 20 seconds and then died again. But I also noticed that the little amount of time I had the car running that it had apparently leaked out enough oil that when the coolant fans were on it was spraying a mist of oil all over everything. It had that small leak from the oil cap before, but never like this. The combination of these two issues have me stumped. I still am learning how to work on this car but I have no idea where to begin with this one. I was even trying to just trade it in to get another car so my fiance would have a way to work w/o having to bum rides. But nobody would take it not running since it was a daewoo. So I either need to find out what is wrong with it or just cut my losses with it and sale it as is.
I appreciate any and all help. Thanks

Thanks for the help. The car is on the 6th valve cover gasket since we bought it two years ago. The last one was installed by the dealer. The car had serious backpressure and crankcase pressure issues and was always messing up the half moon ends on the gaskets. The dealer supposedly fixed that and the gasket appears to have stopped leaking. Most of the oil I am seeing now appears to be comming from the oil cap. It flows over the valve cover under the plastic cover. I already pulled the wires when I cleaned the engine up the last time. I did not see any oil deposits down in the plug holes. But I can check again. Also when the car died, I did pull the plugs out too and they still looked fine.daewoomofo wrote:it sounds like you need a valve cover gasket. there are rubber gasket rings that go aroudn the spark plugs and they go bad and iol will get down inside the plug holes, and it will fowl out th spark plugs. pull your plug wires off (one at a time) and see of the spark plug well is full of oil.
Thanks again.

first off... locate that oil leak, i can't see how a leaky oil cap or cam cover gasket gets oil on the cooling fans, i recon this is more serious than just a cam cover gasket.
make sure the car got enough oil before attempting to start the engine.
make sure the PCV is not blocked... if it is then all oil seals will start leaking
make sure the spark plugs and wires are not fouled by the oil comming off the cam cover gasket.

I wish I could get it to an autozone. It will not even leave my garage.lanos2001 wrote:well i'd say if you can get it to an autozone or have someone come out with a OBD-II code reader that would help out a lot, probably. that way if it did through a CEL at one point the it would read it and tell you the problem.

I know it has plenty of oil. Oil was just changed right before it died and was still full. Also I was told that car does not have a PCV. And for the spray. What it is doing is leaking from somewhere on the engine and then the fans are blowing it all over. I do not think it is actually getting on the fans. I know a week before the car died I opened the hood and oil had covered everything up to the firewall. Looked like somebody took a squirt gun and just started spraying. And I checked the plugs. They are fine and I did not see any oil in the plug holes. That was about the only place that did not have oil though.MMamdouh wrote:first off... locate that oil leak, i can't see how a leaky oil cap or cam cover gasket gets oil on the cooling fans, i recon this is more serious than just a cam cover gasket.
