2002 Lanos Auto 16K Miles knock retard?

Post by desert_lanos »

Hey all,

I am new and just bought a pristine low mileage (16K) Lanos Sedan Auto from an older lady ... (60's) ... It is like new ... LOL the floor mats were still in the oem bags in the trunk ...

I ran the warranty history on this car and it had a single SES light due to a clogged fuel filter ... They replaced it under warr ... That's it ... I was reluctant to buy this car but after about 4 days of solid internet research I think I just bought a great car ... I have a 2000 Corolla and a 2002 Avalanche ... The car was basically bought for a back-up and daily commuter instead of driving the AV ... (Gas prices ya know should about cover the Visa Gold payment I bought the car with haha)

ANyways, my enthusiasm is obvious ... I owned a 1988 LeMans (bought new) for a couple years and knew it was Daewoo back then ...

I have a Diablo Predator for the Avalanche that I have done a lot of custom tuning with and have extensive experience with the GM GEN III PCM's ... I plugged the pred into the Lanos and to my surprise it recognized the code ... I scanned for stored DTC's and none were logged ... I did some driving in about 80 degree weather last night using the real-time data feature and everything seemed pretty squared away for my operating environment ...

EXCEPT... KR under 1/2 - 3/4 throttle was running anywhere between 5 - 7 degrees of retard ... (wow) ... at WOT it tapered back as the revs climbed but was still above my max comfort of 3 degrees on a daily driver on level ground unloaded ...

I am going to run a can of Berrymans through the tank, refill with some 91 octane and try it again to see if it goes away ... Maybe the calibration in the Lanos likes higher octane or the chambers are carboned-up from grannie ... Who knows ... I also think the valve cover shield might be inducing some vibration fooling the knock sensor to thinking it's knock ... I would think if it was pulling 7 degrees, I would have audible but I don't hear a thing ... (Runs very smooth and winds up smooth)

According to my O2 voltage and a couple other things, I don't think I'm lean ... Anyways, a fun cheap like new car to have fun with ... :P

I hope the horror stories of 25 MPG for the Auto are not true ... I was hoping for 30+ ... Highway ...

I have a lot to learn about this car and am the extreme forum dude ... I am a Global Mod on two others and was happy to find this one for the Lanos !

Hope to have some fun here ... BTW, anyone know what that clicking sound is that comes from the right rear of the car right after an overnight cold start? ... Right after the clicking, it idles down ...

If any of you want to know final drive RPM's on the Lanos auto at certain speeds let me know ...

laterzzz......
