ceramic coating exhaust
I was watching "two guys garage" and they mentioned ceramic coated headers. I havnt thought of it before but now that I do it sounds better and cheaper than header wrap. Plus i've heard mixed things about header wraps rusting and cracking the exhaust. Anyways I was thinking it'd be a good idea to ceramic coat the down pipe as thats where most of the heat would come from. Input? How much does this kinda thing cost and where would I get it done?

Re: ceramic coating exhaust
it's pretty expensive. I got my manifold done at cost and it still cost me around $50.kinkyllama wrote:I was watching "two guys garage" and they mentioned ceramic coated headers. Funny you should say something about the downpipe... we're working on a custom downpipe without that 1" pinch that restricts us so much. More to come...
what about wraps?... are they effective? dangerous? worth the effort?

I've heard alot bad about them. I made a post on the track forums and the few people that use them havnt had any problems but ceramic coating is probbaly about the same price anyways. I've heard the wraps can cuz rusting. I've also heard they lock heat in to much and can cause crackingMMamdouh wrote:what about wraps?... are they effective? dangerous? worth the effort?

Stay away from wraps unless you know what you are doing or having it professionaly done. They have to have just the right amount of overlap. If you don't have enough, they aren't effective, if you go too much, they can lock in way to much heat causing premature cracking, warping, and in some severe cases melting . If I remember it correctly, at one point they used header wrap on some round track races (may be Nascar?) and by the end of the 200 mile 180 MPH+ race, the only thing holding the headers together was the header wrap alone!

Why is that?Audacityracing wrote:i'd trust a header wrap or black velvet before ceramic coatings, but that's me...
I dont know anything about ceramic coating

it stands to reason that financially speaking... wraps and black velvet (paint) are cheaper than ceramics. they also last longer and aren't as brittle (ceramics scatch and chip... and if you're road-racing and a chunk of debris knocks a chip from your ceramic downpipe... then you will have a hotspot which would be bad.
wraps just need a bit of maintinence to keep them running right... and if you are having a stainless exhaust rust won't be an issue unless you drive into a chlorine factory . the local tune shop here sells black wraps in 25' lengths for 10 bucks a package... pretty cheap if you ask me.
black velvet is a paint made by 3m. it's a surface paint that reduces radiant heat by extreme amounts. you paint it on and then bake in your oven and you have a totally freakin awesome heat insulator that weighs next to nothing and won't come off unless the top layer of metal is removed. it's a little more expensive than a wrap, but works great. even if you didn't do your header or downpipe in black velvet, i would definitely do the hot side of the turbo. that also limits the heat transfered to the charge air by radiant properties, which makes your intercooler more efficient.

Hmm... well how much would ceramic coating cost?
My front splitter kinda blocks debris from hitting anything. Plus I wouldnt be able to use black velvet cuz a downpipe is a bit big to fit in the oven

blackvelvet just needs to be heated to 300 degrees before it is permemnant... so run once on the freeway after you install it

Yeah i plan on doing that too.. but header wrap is being discussed in the NASA forums and they mentioned it'd be just as good to do the downpipe as that has more of an area the let heat out than just the mani.Audacityracing wrote:oh hey... one more thing...
wrapping the downpipe isn't really crucial... the manifold is where the heat needs to be kept in!!!!
I like this black velvet stuff though.. very easy to install and fairly cheap
Only thing that worrys me about it is the fact it stand up to only 1400degrees F... whats a turbo exhaust temps run, isnt it like 1100-1250?
