The F40 will fit the Pontiac C20GET or C20LZ... it should even fit the V6 engines if you get the Bellhousing for the V6
You'd probably need to make some custom mounts.... but that's no different than if you tried to fit an F20/F28 into your Pontiac.
It would also fit all iron block 1.6L,1.8L,2.0L,2.2L,2.4L
Now...keep in mind that the Saab bell housing might be completely different than the bellhousing on the F40 that is mated to the Z20LET in Europe/UK
I am still crossing my fingers that they only made two bellhousings.... one for 6cyl and one for 4cyl
I still haven't been able to get a good look at a Z20LET mounted to an F40 outside of the engine bay.

if what you say is right, then they are all the same block with different accessories. the C20LZ, C20GET, C20LET, Z20LET, T20SED..., U22... are all the same block. if the F40 came on the Z20LET then it will bolt on. the question is then which one. check out this website http://www.cheersandgears.com/index.php?pid=3 , there is a brake down of the common transmissions in new GM cars and trucks. pontiac and saab offer the F40 in two different housings (saab= MU9 and pontiac is=MT2). get back to me with what you think!

we didn't replace the tranny when we swapped the 2.0 into the 1.6 nubira so i recon the tranny side of the engine is the same for the 1.6 and 2.0.

Yes the bellhousing is the same for the 1.4/1.5/1.6/1.8/2.0/2.2/2.4 family, except for the auto block. It has an 'extra' unused corner (for auto gearbox), which needs to be cut off in order to fit 5 spd. Quite easy actually, but can take some time to complete nicely.MMamdouh wrote:we didn't replace the tranny when we swapped the 2.0 into the 1.6 nubira so i recon the tranny side of the engine is the same for the 1.6 and 2.0.

Here is the F40 from a Vectra V6 Diesel motor....
The bolt pattern in the top half is identical to the F16..... which is great.... it will fit into our vehicles!!!!!
After hundreds of hours of research I've determined that there are three different versions.
One that bolts up to the 3.9L V6 here in North america (wrong bolt pattern)
One that bolts up to the 2.0L Aluminum Saab engine ( 90% wrong bolt pattern.... haven't found a good picture)
One that bolts up to the 3.0L V6 Diesel found in the Opel/Vauxhall Vectra
So.... although the version we need does not exist here (yet) there are a few options.
1) Import the entire transmission from UK/Germany
2) Import just the bellhousing and convert one purchased here in North America
The F40 swap will be complex.
it uses a cable driven shifter for one.
our hydraulic clutch cylinder might not be big enough to make it work.
custom driveshafts will need to be manufactured
most likely custom mounts will need to be manufactured.
Clutch/flywheel might be an issue.... I will have to get a good picture of the 3.0L Diesel flywheel and clutch to compare to ours.
But..... the F40 seems to be one hell of a transmission.... there are Fiero guys bolting this F40 up to Corvette LS1 V8 engines!!!!
I will continue my search for part numbers....

No..... the bottom of the F16 has no bolts where the F40 does.... all the important mounting holes are there on the F40.
THIS IS A DIRECT BOLT ON !!!!
Perhaps the lower bolts were for some kind of extra mount or they were there to be compatible with the Y30DT (3.0L Diesel )
The point is that the extra holes on the bottom of the F40 are not required.

Finally found some Saab transmission pictures..... No F40.... but the pattern is the same as the picture I posted....
So............ in theory........ the Saab tranny should fit our engines..... in theory.
I'm going to work on it more..... hopefully I will find a Saab F40 for sale somewhere.
