Slippy clutch...maybe?

Post by MMamdouh »

hi guys

i always used to tell people that the best test for the clutch is to yank the hand brake, put the car in 4th gear then try to move it... if the clutch is OK then the engine should stall instantly.

the problem is i failed that test  tryed it today while bored in a traffic light and the car didn't stall... i am not sure though if that was due to bad clutch or due to a very senstive left foot

i don't complaine from the clutch otherwise, the car accelerates great, i can spin the wheels in 1st and 2nd gears, went 170kms not so long ago and moved the car with the rear wheels fully locked before on 1st gear... i am now wondering if this test is really a trustworthy test.

what do you think guys? anybody tried that test before and got the same results i got??

I really doubt that it's a good test. When I had my Ford Contour, my clutch was great. I once started the car in 5th gear (from a stop). Took some time but I did it.

I have no problem starting in 2nd w/o ac on... but anything higher i think my car would stall, unless i burnt the clutch

Is this the first time that you are trying this test? Frankly, our 8 valve engines are very torquey (something like 112lb-ft) so it's no surprise that you can slip clutch in 4th and not stall.

well mine is slipping a bit, but it seem that is due to an oil leak... damn crank oil seal
