Hello all, the drivers door on my year 2000 Nubira has locked shut. I can get to the latch mechanism with a steel ruler by sliding it between the glass and the window but the latch doesn't seem to be working even though I can feel the lever going up and down. I can do the same on the passenger door and the door pops open so I guess the mech has broken somehow. If I can't get the mech to work how can I get the door open tp replace it? Any help appreciated.
Ian.

Can you not open it from inside? By trying the handle from the inside it should automatically pop open the button, If not, try and take the door card off from inside, which is doubtful because of the dash coming so close to the door card. You could take out the front drivers seat though to give yourself some room, 4 13mm bolts and usually a wee electrical connection underneath. If you cant get all the wee pin things out of the doorcard, dont force it, the door cards rip really easy and it'll forever flop when youclose the door etc and gets really annoying!
Other than that, Have you tried useing a woodsaw from the outside? You can slide a wood saw down between the glasa nd the door, take the rubber strip off first though or you'll annihillate it, and you can catch the latch with the teeth on the saw.

No the door won't open from the inside. I've taken the card off the passenger door to have a look at how everything works and I now think that the rod has come off the catch so the door isn't unlocking. I like the saw idea, I may try that but with something over most of the teeth (Gaffer tape?). I've been faffing about all today with bits of wire, I tried a kite rod with a bike spoke attatched too but ended up losing the spoke inside the door, lol. I'm going to see if my local garage can get in, if not it's out with the Stanley knife I'm afraid.
Thanks for the help.

I've been able to open doors a few times with the wood saw. Works quite well. The spoke one's also a fave trick of mine lol. You think one of the spoke like bars inside the door has popped off the lock/acuator then? Even if you can get the B pillar side of the door card off, you could prob get your arm in at a mad angle to try and open it. obv would need the driver seat wayyy outta the way for this though.
If you're going for the saw idea, i recommend something between the saw and the window. My friend wrecked the security etching on the window trying to open his door with a saw.
Just to get something straight, does your lock work? I mean if you turn your key is it just stiff as if its trying to do something but cant? Or is it free-er, or feels like it unlocks but the button doesnt pop up?

Everything seems to work as normal except the interior lock, the one that lifts up and down, which doesn't go anywhere any more. It had been occasionally slipping down for as week or two but I could just lift it up again and the door would open. I kept meaning to get around to doing something about it........ The exterior handle and the interior handle, the key lock etc all move as usual but don't feel like they're doing anything. As the interior lock, the one that lifts up and down, is in the down position all the time I can only assume it isn't unlocking. I think the central locking motor is okay too as it makes a noise like it is working.
Definitely going in with the saw tomorrow even if only to baffle the neighbours!!

Got nowhere with the saw unfortunately, the door holds it at the wrong angle so I can't get it to go where I need it. I used my best Spear and Jackson too, Eric Olthwaite would have been proud!
Off to the garage tomorrow to see what they can do.
Cheers,
Ian.
