i wouldnt touch a pioneer headunit. My friend has had a couple and they dont read mp3 cds very well at all. Cds that play fine in my clarion or my girlfriends clarion dont play or skip in bens pioneer (and his old one). Alpine make some awesome head units and there are some nice kenwoods around, and ive had nothing but good service from my clarion

its all personal prefference, and to an extent location. Being in australia probably dont get the best of everything, but i form my opinion from experience, and it is backed up by the fact the very reputuble shops in sydney (platinum, lifestyle and CAE) dont even stock pioeer, and out off all the magazines i have (hundreds, all V8 mags though) none had anything wonderful to say.
