A/C not working

Post by Woowagon »

I just realized that my air conditioning in inoperative in my 2000 Nubira. Push the a/c button - no clutch engagement but, the button light does come on. I checked the fuse and it is good.

I bought a re-fill/leak sealer kit with a gauge hoping that it was only low and that the low psi switch was doing its job. I checked the pressure with the engine off - no reading on the gauge. Started the engine and turned a/c on - still no reading. Filled it to 35-40 psi (70 degrees outside) but still no clutch engagement.

Can someone tell me how to check the relay and/or the clutch? Anyone other tips or hints? Thanks in advance.

OK, went on some errands and hit the a/c button just for the heck of it and the clutch now is working!?! Not really any cooler air but it may need still more refrigerant. Will check later and post up.

This morning I emptied the rest of the can which didn't quite fill the system to its proper level. But, there is a huge difference in temperature now. I ran the a/c for a while to distribute the oil and leak stop agent. I'll give it a few days to see if it stays cool or if the leak is still present before topping up the system.

Thanks for your experiment & info.
If it works on the long term would you tell us what's the brand U used for?

I can give you the product info now and an update later. It is made by EF Products.

http://www.efproducts.com/index.html

I could not find the exact product on their site, sorry. It is called Quest Auto Air Conditioning R-134a with Sub-Zero Synthetic Booster. It is a 19 oz. can. I picked it because it was the only one that re-filled, sealed leaks, and included a low side gauge (it is in the cap). I paid $26 at AutoZone.

A further update in a day or so......

Day four of test complete - still as cold as first day. I have not checked the pressure since emptying the can. The pressure was about 35 psi then which is a little low for where the ambient temp was that day. I'm going to top it off next week if things stay as they are (good).
