I'd love to give you a hard time and see if you understand the answer to your own question.... and yes.... I know the answer although I don't see why you would ask this to a girl who works at an audio shop.TheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote:Stereo systems?
Ok ... *grin* ... will you explain to me skin effect in reference to power cable in a car stereo amplifier power cable and why it does not apply in DC circuitry?
Frankly I can't see why anyone would be concerned about skin effect as it pertains to electric fields... are there guys on your audio site that have concerns about it ?
The only concern would be with High Voltage EM fields like those generated by the ignition coil and spark plug wires.
I personally love the skin effect as it keeps me nice and safe when working with high voltage
I like to play with Tesla coils and ion generators.... I've actually charged myself up to about 15 million volts (just a guess from the arc length)....and it hurts like a SOB when you have to discharge...feels about 10 times worse than a bee sting...leaves a little red spot and makes your skin numb for a few minutes.... I actually had a corona coming off my hands.... way cool... I could make dust particles glow and lift paper off a table from about 1" away
aimzwoo.... what do you do for autobarn? ( sales? install ? design ? )

What you said is exactly my point.Erfinder wrote:I'd love to give you a hard time and see if you understand the answer to your own question.... and yes.... I know the answer although I don't see why you would ask this to a girl who works at an audio shop.TheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote:Stereo systems?

It was a loaded question.
And no, you wouldn't give me a hard time trying to see if I understood the answer to my own question.
The point I was getting to was there was a sales person at a local car strereo shop who was trying to tell me that the 1/0 welding cable I was using for my power in my car stereo system was no good because, as he said "voltage travels on the outside of the strand. The more strands in the cable, the better, because there is more surface area for it to travel. That way, the voltage will get to the amplifier more easily."
Nice way to sell things.

That's funny!!! Talk about an idiot.... 1/0 Welding cable is the absolutely most efficent cable in existance.... more efficent than most car audio cable and way way cheaper. (well.... not the most efficent.... but close )TheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote:The point I was getting to was there was a sales person at a local car strereo shop who was trying to tell me that the 1/0 welding cable I was using for my power in my car stereo system was no good because, as he said "voltage travels on the outside of the strand. I always love humiliating sales men at audio shops.... one time I brought in the guys manager to let him know this guy should keep his mouth shut because he didn't know his head from his ass.
Needless to say the manager dealt with me directly and told the sales man to go sweep the floor in the warehouse.... the manager gave me some smoking hot prices on some pioneer elite series mid woofers and appoligized about a dozen times.
It's allways helpfull when you can drop the names of the sons of the owner of a huge franchise stereo shop and tell them you used to get a staff discount ( sometimes I got my equipment straight from the Alpine rep.... which was about 20% under store cost )
I even had one idiot tell me I needed 4 guage wire for CD player!
I tried to explain to him that the power wire going inside the deck is only a 14 Gauge and that it is the "limiting factor" in power handling but he just didn't understand what I was talking about.
Anyways.... I'm getting off topic again....
