2.0 L engine swap project
hi all
I have a 2009 aveo with 1.5 sohc engine. and it sucks . it has a very limited torque . I don't feel power with it even with a cold air intake system .I need to improve my car performance . I need to know more about choco chip . and if it will add some power to my wheels . and if there is any other modification to do so .
I am planning to swap my engine with the 2.0 L etec2 engine in the ( optra/lacetti/forenza ) . I heard that it is easy to install the 1.6 engine of my aveo into the optra . So I think both cars share engine mounts , engine management , ecu and wiring harness .. need to know will it works for me this way?
I am planning also to change my car from manual to automatic. how hard will it be? I mean the parts will be needed in such project .
need your opinion and feedback
I have 2009 aveo sedan , 1.5 sohc , manual trans , injen cold air intake
thanks

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
chocochip will not get you were you are aiming... it has very limited effects (if any)
not sure about the 2.0 but the 1.6 is a direct fit... it is similar to a 1.6 swap in a lanos... only the engine bay is tighter in your car... bear in mind some serious brakes and suspension upgrades and the 1.5 aveo brakes sucks just like the ones on the 1.5 lanos and the 2.0 engine is fu$%ing heavy
i am not sure about the manual to auto tranny swap... every body i know goes the other way around... anyways on a lanos their is a bit of a structural difference when it comes to car chassis but i am not sure if it is the same on the aveo... if it is the same then some cutting will be involved and i don't recommend that at all

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
about brakes . it was sucks . but after replacing the front discs with new OEM ones and with my 17'' rims . the brakes works fine . it is hard to press to gain braking pwer . but it took me away from many many situations . looking forword to replace pads with the ceramic ones . I found a dealer have them . but I am waiting my current pads to be finished .
about the engine . I dont know . but with logic . the engine who fits both the aveo and the optra share mounts for both cars . I dont think that the 2.0 L engine have a diffrent mounts than the 1.6 and with my car the 1.5 L engine is so small in the engine bay .
BUT all that are thoughts . I need a verification for a one who have the experience in such job

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
I have a 2004 Aveo and I have swapped the 1.6L to the 2.0L found in the Optra.
- You need a turn key engine, meaning ALL the accessories from the flywheel to the alternator, power streering pump, everything that runs on the serpentine belt.
- You need a 2.0L ECU because the 1.6L's ECU (in your case 1.5L) will make the engine ping when you give it gas (I blew my 1st 2.0L this way) You can keep the wiring but there is work to be done on it, it mainly consists of lengthening wires to accomodate the bigger engine, easy but time consuming.
- The engine will drop right in, using the stock mounts without any problems, you can use your clutch and gearbox from the original engine as well but dont forget that you need a 2.0L flywheel (my 1.6L's flywheel bolt holes were just so slighty off to fit the 2.0L)
If you have any questions feel free, I will keep an eye on this thread.

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
this is great . I have an advantage here in m y market that the engines here sold with its gearbox . So the flywheel problem will mean no problem at all . If you can provide me with some photos of your lovely machine . I think that there is no diffrence in the engine bay between my 2009 and your 2004 aveo . I will go this weekend to look for the 2.0L engine . I need also to hear from you about the performance . is it deserve the effort to make the swap . tell me some numbers . about top speed . 0-60 miles time , torque and so on
thanks also for your feedback and help

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
Performance wise its a totally different car. 0-60 times with the 1.6L were in the 11.5 to 12 second range, with the 2.0L its around 8.5 to 9 seconds depending on traction.
A friend of mine has a 2.3L Mazda 3 GT and we are pretty much equal, i also raced a 2005 Acura RSX (not the Type S) and its also very close he is just slightly faster then me. Those 2 cars would kill me with the 1.6L
Top speed i have reached is around 220 kph, it's hard to tell as the speedometer stops at 200 kph.
There is alot more power then the 1.6, sometimes the wheels spin when i punch it in 1st gear. Compared to your 1.5L, if it's not too expensive for you its definitely worth it to do this swap.

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
@ Nemasys
what about the brakes?? i recon you already got the 256mm disks since you had the 1.6 engine... now is your current braking system coping well with the extra power??
also what about the suspension??? is the 2.0 too heavy for the car??
@ Nefary
i guess after this confirmation your best buy would be a complete engine + ECU + wiring harness... i recon the 2.0 engine with the D16 short ratio gear box you currently have will give you even better acceleration than the D20 gearbox... OK top speed will not be as high as the D20 but who cares as long as you can top up to 200 KPH??... in this case make sure you get the engine with its clutch
also your brakes will suffer a lot with this massive increase in performance... you have to upgrade to the 1.6 aveo brake specs (256mm rotors, 19mm calipers and 22mm master cylinder)

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
I know that the aveo have the same brakes for all models . the 1.4 , 1.5 and 1.6 . the parts catalogue didn't refer to diffrent types of brake discs . about suspension the 2.0L engine is not that heavy than the 1.6 . My friend put a 2.0L GDI engine in his lancer . he apgrades from 1.3L to 2.0L with no change in suspension and he didn't feel that the car suffers . I dont know if this is a fact or just the lancer is a super car!
Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
the aveo you got have the very same rotors of a lanos (236mm) and from your previous experience with the 1.5 SOHC lanos you know they suck like hell... yet i can find any proof that the 1.6 aveo came with 256mm rotors. the funny thing is that when i was searching for rotors for my front brakes upgrade i asked for the aveo rotors and the guy at the shop showed me the 256 rotors that i am currently using so i don't know if he was talking from his ass or my internet search skills has deteriorated... anyways we always have Nemasys to confirm with regards to the stock rotor size on the 1.6 aveonefary wrote:I know that the aveo have the same brakes for all models . the 1.4 , 1.5 and 1.6 . the parts catalogue didn't refer to diffrent types of brake discs . about suspension the 2.0L engine is not that heavy than the 1.6 . BTW i came across this article about the aveo... you will like the work done on front and rear brakes as well as strut bars

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
Im not quite 100% sure about the size of the rotors but they are impressively big for a car this size, i swapped the stock ones for cross drilled rotors with ceramic pads about a year and a half ago. Stopping power is very strong even with the 2.0L in front and 17 inch low profile performance tires in summer, i can easily lock up the front wheels on dry pavement.
Front what ive read from different sites on the web, the front rotors on the north american Aveo are indeed 256mm or 10.1 inches in diameter.
For those who you who dont know, we have a very active forum for Aveo owners which is located at http://www.aveonetwork.com/
Feel free to drop a line!

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
I dont know the exact diameter of mine . but all I know that my rotors are bigger than the 1.5 lanos which found in egypt and is the same as the 1.6 lanos
I am sure about that . my car can't handle the 13'' rims . I am planning on upgrading my pads to the ceramic ones. I heared that they are great but they need to heat up . rotors will be replaced when the stock damage

Re: 2.0 L engine swap project
i am confused now... i got a friend of mine a set of 1.5 SOHC lanos rotors to replace the ones on his 1.5 SOHC aveo and both rotors were identical
