Engine Interchange

Post by mechtruck »

I have a 1.6L, 2004 Aveo, with a broken belt and damaged head. I found a low mile 2007 motor that I would like to put in. The junk yards all say that it is not an interchange, and they can not tell me why. However I have read on the internet of one guy who did it. All he said to do is change the intake and valve cover. Does anyone have any input on this?

i don't think their is any difference between the '04 and '07 engines... maybe they are telling you that to force you to buy the whole engine

The difference is drive by wire throttle body, just swap in your cable driven throttle body from your 2004 and you are all set.

You might also need to use your 2004 injectors, as i've swapped to a newer engine myself and the injectors had a different connector, but thats easy to do as well.

The rest of the engine is identical.

- HKS SSQV, OBX Wastegate

Unless the valve heads snapped off the bottom half should still be OK.
It just happened to our Nubie, I'm in the process of getting it running. All 16 valves were bent! And we had the head repaired and valves replaced.
Pull the head see if all the valves are still in it, see if the cylinder walls look good, turn the motor over by hand with the head off, if it's not locked up or walls scored you should be good to go.

If all the guides are good you can get the head rebuilt for about the same price as a reman head.If the guides are broken it's junk!

All the valves are bent, pistons are scored from the valve hit. I can get the head redone for 450 add the belt and a head gasket and I am at 550. I got the motor for 450 minus 50 bucks for scrape value of the old core makes it 400 for the motor, and I don’t have to mess with the belt timing. The car has 70K on it and the motor 15K, cheaper to swap the motors, plus the timing belt lasts longer in the 07 motors. Think I have everything figured out, the main question is the PVC system, the 2004 has a vent tube in the block that goes to the valve cover, the 2007 is not drilled for it, I do not feel like drilling into the block so I am going to use the 07 system. I think that the 04 system is not needed because the 07 has two oil ports in the head. If anyone has close up pics of a 2007 motor I would like to see the hose routing.

Oh 15000 miles on the new motor cool. Yeah those cost are dead on. That's we've spent so far all sixteen valves bent but the bottom end looks good low speed when it the roller disintegrated on the intake side. So I'm trying to do the belt thing now and it's been a mayor PIA. Found a misprint in the Alldata.com info and snapped off the idler pulley stud! They printed 18 Ft lbs as 118 ft lbs! Yeah I should have know better! Nothing on these motors has that kind of torque value!

Two oil ports in the head? Wow never seen anything like that! No input on any of that but I would ask if you could use an oil catch can to solve the issue?

Update, I put in the 2007 motor, had to put the motor in the car without the intake on because of clearance issues, and then put it on with the motor in the car. That was kind of a pain. I used the 2004 intake, throttle body and crank sensor, used the 2007 valve cover and PCV system. Car ran great, however after driving it three codes showed up. PO300, PO700, P1781. So I had to do a crank relearn. You must clear the codes then disconnect the battery for 5 min. while the Pos & Neg. leads are jumped together to drain the capacitors in the ECU. If you don’t do this, the codes will come back even thou the scan tool says the relearn took. I sold the car today.
