First I measured the diameter of the intake manifold, it's 60mm. The intake hole in the airbox is only 55mm... restricting air flow. Sounds like this can be improved!
My goal: to make a Cold Air Intake with a larger diameter than original that takes cool air from the front of the car.
In advance, I removed the intake sound resonator and tubing to the airbox (but I explain how to reach them in points 1. and 2.)
1. Take out the bottom plate (3 screws) + also loosen the right front wheel mudguard (2 screws at the outside of the mudguard/fender, easily accessible & 1 screw below).
2. Take out the foglight or foglight cover for easier access. Go underneath the car and loosen the screw and clip at the backside of the front bumper to get the foglight or cover out. Once this is done the resonator can be removed, it's held by 2 screws and some hook. After that the Y-tubing can be removed.
3. Intake is restricted to 55mm...
4. Intake to the engine is 60mm. I didn't found a 60mm tube but got a 75mm instead (bigger=better :-P)
5. View from underneath the car. There is a large tube now instead of the resonator and tubing. I taped the tube with ducktape to strenghten and protect it (I taped it all the way afterwards).
6. I cut out a 75mm hole in the airbox and fitted the 75mm tube in it.
7. Sealed the edges with some durable kit and let it dry for some hours.
8. Fitted the airbox back in and installed the 75mm tube into the foglight hole. Fit's nicely with some tension to hold it in place
9. A bit of black paint to make it blend in with the car...
Results:
I made a short test drive and there is some noticable improvement.
-better throttle respons!
-some extra horsepower at high revs
-better sound
