Lanos suspension problem

Post by dandaran »

I just buy Daewoo Lanos, 1999, 1.5 SOHC, and when a drive on some bumpy road i hear some knocking at the front wheels which is very noisy. Some people tell me that the problem is in the steering rack and that is a common problem with the daewoo lanos. The steereng rack for Lanos here is abouth 200 euros(not cheap), so can you tell me your opinion and how can i fix this. Tnx.

I don't think I have heard of a "steering rack" going, it's more likely a ball joint or your shocks.

When you press down on the front bumper quick and hard does the car come back quickly but stop moving right away, or does it bounce up and down a bunch of times?

If your shocks are no good they can bottom out on bumps and cause a loud noise + rough ride.

Does the sound occur all the time, or is it more noticeable when you go around a corner?

Doubt its the steering rack, never heard of them doing anything but their job.

there are hundreds of other parts that could cause these problems due to general wear n tear. just need to check over the suspension carefully.

this is one of two things

ball joints of steering rack

corroded caliper pins causing too much caliper play

The sound occur only on small bumps and no problems in corners, and when i hit a larger hole the sound is normal like when i drive with a new car.

Most likely a problem with worn stabilizer bushings (20) or stabilizer link bar (10-11-12). Check these items for any play/wear. Could also be the ball joint.

Further info with the pic:
(2): ball joint
(3)(4): control arm bushings
(11): stabilizer link bar bushing
(20): stabilizer bushing

+1 on maximizor's input.

The exact same happened to me not long ago. most likely is the outer ball joint.
