My 98 2.0l nubira smells strongly of acid when I cane it and then stops. It is always after heavy throttle and it always clears up after a few minutes of thrashing. Oh and it trips the check engine light and makes the car idle at 1600rpm. Its not the battery.
Am I barking up the wrong tree to think catalyst?

Re: The smell of a dying cat?
sounds like a clogged or bad catalytic converter to me
Re: The smell of a dying cat?
Even new cars will stink like that when you run them hard. The sulfur content of the gasoline can also affect the smell. Rotten egg odor is hydrogen sulfide and it generally means that the converter is working very hard. Post your check engine light code if you can.
