Suzuki Reno vs Chevy Optra 5

Post by ChiPPy »

Does anyone know the difference between the Suzuki Reno and the Chevy Optra5, as far as the engine is concerned? I was just checking some specs on the Suzuki US site, and the Chevy Canada site, and although they are essentially the same car with different name plates, the engine specs were different. I noticed that the Reno states it has 126 horses @ 5400RPM and 131 ft-lbs tourque @ 4000RPM, while the Optra5 has 119 horses @ 5400RPM and 126 ft-lbs tourque @ 4000RPM. I also checked the Suzuki Forenza specs, which are the same as the Optra and Optra5. Any ideas why the Reno has a few extra horses, and how they got there, and how my Optra5 can get the same power?

There is no difference between the two cars... it's all in the programming of the ECU

The bastards at GM must have wanted lower power levels so that the Optra didn't compete with their other cars such as the Cobalt and Cavalier.

360Dynamics and I will most certainly investigate this issue.... I want to see if I can get my ECU reprogrammed at a Suzuki dealership. We've been talking about it for a while now but I keep forgetting to go by the local Suzuki dealership to see if they will do it for me.

Perhaps I might weight until they are offering the SWT program update which is supposed to be good for 25hp ( 32hp for me )

It's unfortunate that they went with a totally different ECU manufacturer and fuel injectors otherwise I would have swapped in a Nubira ECU by now. ( which was good for 132 hp )

I figured as much. The ECU is the key. Suzuki was smart to leave the Forenza at 119Hp as well, so that the Reno can be the family leader, and not have to compete with itself under a different name. I hope it's something simple to reprogram the ECU, because it's not like the Optra is great on gas anyway, so we may as well squeeze some more power out of it.

Not according to the Suzuki US web site. Only the Reno shows 126 horses, the Forenza is listed as 119, like the Optra and Optra5.

That's strange.... I thought the 2004 Forenza had 126hp

I wonder if Suzuki changed it for some reason... or perhaps it's a misprint on their site..... very strange :?

Suzuki Reno concept

Post by silver1 »

I was just looking at the suzuki reno concept car and they said that the concept car also had the same power numbers, but it also had a yoshimura cat back exhaust and a K@N typhoon short ram air intake. Just wondering if these are the numbers that they are advertising for the whole product line. These mods would probably give similar numbers on our cars.

Erfinder, have you gotten any new info about the Suzuki ECU flash? I'm really hoping that it's going to be this simple to pull a few more horses.

I have to see if the local dealer will consider reprogramming my ECU... if they won't the guys on the other side of the city probably will.

I've been busy as hell so I really haven't given it much thought lately.

We also want to see if there is some way to pull the binary file and re-flash the ECU via laptop.

You are correct, they seem to have updated the specs page at the Suzuki site. 126 and 131 are the new numbers.
