brake lights not coming on

Post by ladydelena »

i own a 2001 leganza, and am currently experiencing three different problems with it. i know NOTHING about cars, and i have searched these forums the best that i can. but i may have missed the answers, since i'm not entirely sure what i'm looking for. *^_^*

anywho, here's what's going on with my car.

1. the brake lights aren't coming on. i've checked the fuses and they're fine. this is a new problem, and a worrying one.

2. i can't move the car out of park without putting the key in the shift-lock. so in order to crank up my car, i have to put the key in shift-lock, shift to neutral, remove the key and put it in the ignition, THEN crank it up. this is not a new problem. but i thought i would mention it for relevence.

3. the air flow dial doesn't work on numbers 1, 2, or 3. number 4 works as well as it ever did, and blasts air out full force. but there is nothing coming out of the vents if the dial is on 1-3. this is the NEWEST problem, and only started after i checked the fuses for the break light issue.

my sweetheart did some independent research on a different forum, and someone said that they had the same brake light/gear shift problem, and all they had to do was replace the "brake switch." i've been looking online today and can't find a part by that name. >_< am i just missing it? and do you think that will fix the problem?

thank you in advance for your help.

well your brake lights going out could be the bulbs. i see you checked your fuses but did you see if the bulbs were burnt out? and as for the a/c controls its a little plastic peice thats broke on the cable. i have the same problem on that. i've never fixed it yet and haven't really looked either. but other people have and said it would take like thrity minutes to take out the dash and replace it and stuff. as for the parking and neutral issue no idea sorry.

i didn't check the bulbs, because i didn't think it was likely that all three went out at the same time.

do you know what the little platic piece on the cable is called, and where i could find information on how to fix it?

both your brake lights and not being able to remove the shifter from park would be caused by a faulty brake switch. I believe they only cost about $12 and are fairly simple to replace. The switch is located up at the brake pedal.

There was a post on the brake issue for a Leganza here somewhere. If I'm correct, Cliff (OZ) had the same issue. I think it had something to do with a connection when you press the brake pedal.

i couldn't find a user by the name of "OZ" on the list... is that the full name?

and i finally found a place that sells brake switches! coats daewoo parts sells them, but i've run into a new confusion here. it lists 3 different brake switches, all with different model numbers and all that supposedly fit the leganza. is there a difference between them, or are they all pretty much the same?

Are they distinguished by the VIN number? If so, just find the right one.

1- a faulty brake light switch causes all brake lights to go off... the switch is right behind the brakes pedal and i don't know which of the three will fit your car.

2- the auto tranny issue is probably caused by the brake switch... that was raised on other forums but i am not so experianced with auto trannys, i am sure it hjas to do with the brake switch though.

3- the A/C blower switch issue is something messed in the wiring behind the dash... i had this issue before but it went away on its own so i didn't get to know which area need sevicing, i could only hear a click behind the dash whenever the blower came on on its own... i just slammed my hand on the dash and it is working fine since then.
