it is the control mechanism for the VGIS system.

this is a Variable Geometry Intake System.

the box you pointed to is the system that controls when the VGIS moves

it is a part of the lanos 1.6 16v engine, or? what is the advantage of this system? the 4 flaps a always in the same position, so not individual for a cylinder...right? so why is a standard throttle valve still there? why not the acceleration bowden cable directly connected to this 4 flaps?

the advantage is that the engine produces both excellent torque and decent horsepower when the device makes those flaps move.

these do not funtion as a throttle valve. inside the intake manifold there are two pathways to the engine. this flap is used to direct the air between the two paths, depending on what position that little piece that LanosManiac posted is doing.

at LOW rpm, the air can flow into BOTH the red and yellow paths. when the rpms reach around 5000, the flaps shut and air can only travel down the YELLOW path.

Does the Nubira mk1 (2000) with the 1,6 16v engine has this? The engine I am talking about is Euro 2 with 105horsepower.

according to the parts manual (found at www.daewootech.net), the engines are very similar if not the same. YES it has the VGIS

i look at your photo of your VGIS, is more cleaned than mine.
my vgis is covered by a oil layer.
you have washed it??
and if yes, how you have made ?

1- the pic is from Chris' Lanos during the head gasket job he did.

2- the intake gets oiled up due to the crank case breather so this is a normal consequence... some people put an oil catch can to reduce the amount of oil being spitted into the intake.

3- i have cleaned my intake before and it made the car perform better.

all i did is get the TB off the intake (i cleaned it as well) and then sprayed all the interior parts of the intake with GUNK carb medic till it was crystal clean... now all the dirt have flooded into the bottom of the intake and into the combustion chamber.

i then sprayed some fuel into the intake to wrens the passages and accumulate the dirt at the pistons then i removed all 4 spark plugs and the coil pack socket and cranked the engine.

the pistons forced out the dirty fuel/carb medic mixture out of the engine and the chambers are now empty... i left the spark plugs off for some 15 min. to evaporate any extra fuel then put every thing back on and tested the car... all that dirt really robs from the car's performance.

if you ever though of doing that remember to do it on a cold engine, remove coil pack socket, do it in a well ventilated space and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

it seem like a crazy idea but it really works and the other alternative would be taking the whole intake off the car.

Does this mean that above 5000rpm path is longer or shorter?

to remove the accumilated dirt in the pistons:

1- remove spark plugs
2- remove coil pack socket
3- start the engine for 3 - 4 seconds.
4- leave it for some 15 mineuts to dry.
5- put every thing back on.
