Custom Lanos Tach Mod

Post by Lowzero2 »

Hi,
I am a new member and would like to say that the information from this site is a great help. I have a 2001 Lanos Sport which I just started working on my cluster to add a tach. I have removed the temp gauge and replaced it with a Auto Meter 2 5/8" sport-comp tach. The tach was too deep to fit in the cluster with the circuit board attatched so I moved it to the back. This will make connecting the wires easier when installing in the car. Silver face tach wasn't my first choice, but the price was right and it matches the trim on my dash. I still need to make a bezel for around the tach to take up the gap, replace the circuit board on the back of the cluster, and then test and install. Here are some pics to check out. Let me know what you think.

I like the idea of using a sheet of aluminum to make a new bezel overlay, but I don't think I have the skills to perform that task. It would be possible for me to make it, but it won't be perfect. Also I have never worked with aluminum before. If anyone has suggestions on how, please post. I am in no hurry to finish, since I purchased this cluster to modify. Still using stock cluster in car.

One Idea is using a piece of black plastic and copying the outside edge of the temp gauge. This way it will be held in place by the stock corner tabs. Cut the hole to fit the tach and place it under the stock bezel. Only draw back to this is there will be groove between the tach and stock bezel, but no light will come through from underneith.
