My Gates timing belt kit arrived... uh oh. hehe
It seems the Partsdinosaur I ordered my timing belt parts from are exactly as described. NOW... hehe I have to get myself prepped for actually doing the job.
a few questions before I even consider starting this:
1. Does any of the car parts shops in the US loan out torque wrenches or do I need to buy one?
2. J-42492 Timing Belt Adjuster... is this something I can borrow from the car parts shop too?
3. Knowing that I am a novice when it comes to this stuff, do you think I would be better off taking it to a shop for the install?
4. Why do you park in the driveway and drive on the parkway?

Wow... one shop... $280... another $210... Holy crap man... expensive stuff to have a shop install the parts for me. Yipes.
Hmmmm... I won't have a chance to actually do the work on the car for a little bit myself, so I might as well wait and see if I get some other replies in here before I do go for it.

its alot simpler then one would think
the hard part is the water pump is what controls the tension and the tool would make it alot easier but no one has it
just makee sure that the cams are pointing at each other and the crank use pointing down at the notch
the power steering pump pully doesnt come off so you have to remove all the bolts and remove the pump bolts then side the pump far forward as possible and side the timing blet behind the pump.. its a tight fit!!!!!!!

Hmmm perhaps I will give it a shot myself. You have renewed my confidence a bit. Also, it seems to me that if really want to get to know my car as well as I can, I should do this myself.
I also think I should go out the back garage and clean it out enough that I can pull my woo in there and work on it. If you had known my grandfather, you would understand why even now, this is not the easiest feat in the world. For something like this... I really should set up shop out there.
The devil is in the details, isn't it? It's all cool though, if all goes well, I only have one more day that I'll need to work on my hood scoop. So, I should be able to find the time to clean up that garage (we have more then one garage) while I'm finishing up the scoop. Heck... it would be nice to have the garage set up for the scoop install too.
Thanks for all your comments guys. If you've done this before and you have anything to say on the subject at all, please... keep it coming. You guys are great.
**Edit** wait... did you just say that nobody can find the J-42492 Timing Belt Adjuster? So... how did you do that part? I mean... I will make completely sure that everything is pointing in the right direction, but how does that get around the not having the J-42492 Timing Belt Adjuster?

make sure you have your self a good set of sockets deep and normal and a good set of open/boxed end wrenches.. racheting wrenches would be the ideal tool for alot of spots
you need to loosen the bolts on the power steering pump before you remove the or loosen the belt.. it holds it in place so you can get the bolts out
also the gears are sharp on the edges of the teeth.. they will cut you up if your not carefull

I don't have any racheting wrenches. I don't have a good set of open/boxed end wrenches... but I do have a lot of sockets, both deep and shallow. I was thinking of just buying the torque wrench instead of borrowing theirs, so maybe I'll just buy a nice set of metric wrenches at the same time.
It seems like my woo always scratches me a little each time I work on her. But I'll be careful of her teeth.

it would hurt... but buy a $150 mechanic's set from craftsman. that's what i started with and i still have it and use it TONS. you can do most everything on the woo with it (need a bigger set for the suspension) and it works great. well worth the money.
as for a torque wrench... just barrow one from autozone, or find a harbor freight and get one there.

Well... I called around to the local chevy dealerships. They have the tool, but won't loan it out or anything. They more or less said they would do the work on it... but of course, they would charge me an arm and a leg for it.
So... the question is now... How do you acomplish the same thing that the timing belt adjuster does, without a timing belt adjuster.
Oh... and I could order one of these timing belt adjusters if I wanted (it's a kent/moore tool)... but it will cost $102 USD + shipping for just that one specialty tool. YAY!... Hell... if I could find a picture of the damn thing I could probably make one myself!
Suggestions?

could always see if someone has a 42mm crows foot, it is almost identical but has a different angle on the handle. Its what my buddy and I used when we changed my belt because no one had that tool.
of course you could buy that tool and lend it to people for 20$ when they want to use it....
