Transmission noise

Post by TheGreatAndPowerfulOz »

I bought my 2002 Lanos last year with 11 miles on the odometer; it now has 22K miles on it.
All this time, my car has done this, but I have never thought to ask anyone because by the time I get back to the computer after driving, I don't think about it.

When I am gently accellerating in 2nd gear, like around a corner in my neighbouhood then take my foot off the gas, I hear a noticably loud knock sound from under the car. It does not always make this sound, but it is usually when I am gently accellerating in 2nd. The only time I hear is is when I take my foot off the gas.

I'm not sure if it is the transmission or a CV joint or even if it is normal to hear this sound.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks,
Cliff

Is this a single "cling" type of a sound? Does it happen on other gears?

Is your car auto or stick?

If the problem was with the outer CV joints, you would hear clicking while going around the corners. If the problem is with the inne CV joint, you will hear it while accelarating in a straight line.

It is a single, semi-low note clunk, aslmost as though the underside of the car was tapped with a large (12" diameter) wooden mallot - LOL - it is hard to describe, but I guess that is what it would sound like).

The car is an automatic and it does not happen very often, and it does not happen in any other gears.

It isn't CV joints as I know exactly what those sound like when they make noise. It happens only when going slowly in 2nd gear and I accellerate. It feels like and sounds like it is coming form the transmission.

Maybe there is a motor mount or transmission mount going bad.

Yes, I have listened to it a little more and I think it is just a noisy gear shift from 3rd to 2nd.
My car has 23K miles on it, and if the tranmission fails, I have a spare I can install.
I was just wondering if anyone else had heard a noise like this from their car.

Guys, I have over 77K miles or abuse on my 4t40e tranny and it hasn't failed on me completely. It's slipping a bit more than usual but it's understandable. ;)

if you want help installing the b&m shift plus ill send show you how

i would actaully say it helps a tun, i have 54k and mine trany slips a lot, i think it might be that when the fluid was changed the place only replaced 5qrts of it, when im on it hard it will slip for about 1 second, maybe less but with the shiftplus it doesnt slip at all on setting one,

at first i wasnt impressed by it but now i think its a great mod for that trany
