Strange ticking sound from engine;spark?

Post by kinkyllama »

There is a strange ticking sound coming from the engine. When looking at it it seams to come a bit more from the right side (or drivers)than left. It sounds almost like it could be the sparks but I didn't notice it untill after I had some work done on my car.

The engine/tranny related work I had done included; qualife lsd, smt-6, oil cooler, and injectors put in (were replaced with nubira injectors untill turbos on as I was running to rich). The smt-6 doesn't have the best tune which may have something to do with it.

Just trying to get ideas. I dont think it's anything major cuz I've been hearing if for at least 7k miles now.

is it a uniform sound? i mean does it occure every sepacfic interval of time or does it randomly appear?

if it is a spark plug leak then you can easly spot it if you pop the hood in the dark with the engine running.

if the engine is running really smoothe it could be the injectors. we recently put an engine in Brittanys car (3300 in a 93 grand am) and you can hear every injector, its jsut a slight ticking sound

try to use a ling screw driver as an ear peice to detect the source of the sound... be very careful when you do that.

Its very uniform. Probably happens a few times a second at idle then increases with revs.

I'll check for a spark leak tonight when it's dark enough.

Right now the injectors are stock from a nubira.

if it is that uniform and fast then it might be a normal sound... did it start to occure with the installation of the nubi injectors? for a fast test put your hand on the fuel filter with the engine running and then you should feel some pulses in it... are those pluses you feel consistent with the sound?? if yes then it is your injectors and this is normal.

the ling screw driver is a misspelled long screw driver :) try it and you will see how effective it is but be careful not to jam it into a moving pully or belt and hurt yourself or the car.
