disc conversion
i got the waterjet back up and running so i thought that i'd put out a disc conversion for the lanos and other t-body cars with GSI or lanos rear beam.
what you get from me is a caliper mount in .5" (50.8mm) mild steel.
to that you have to add calipers assembly, wheel bearings and rotors from a '93 saturn, or other like models
the drums on the lanos are a .5" narrower then the rotor setup without the rotor mountso no spacers or track width adjustment is needed and you get to keep your 4x100 bolt pattern.
the bracket set is $60 and the rotor assembly is up to whatever you want to spend. no matter what you spend in parts this kit is a better price and quality then the one sold on mantapart and you don't have to convert to 5 lug pattern.
i'll post pics here soon of both the bracket and the step by step conversion.

Sounds like a cool setup..... I'm definitly going to pay attension to your progress with this.... I've been thinking about importing an Astra GSE rear end to get some disks on the ass end.
I guess Porsche 911 parts can also be used on the Astra/Lanos.... I was going to look into it at some point.... Gsiturbo mentioned it a few times..... I think there is a guide on the conversion on Migweb somewhere.

remeber to change your proportional valves or else your rear will lock and you will lose control at hard braking setuations.

Yes but is not a "oh i have brake hard, ill lose control"MMamdouh wrote:remeber to change your proportional valves or else your rear will lock and you will lose control at hard braking setuations.

then what will happen if you brake hard on a curve??
i didn't do this swap myself but i am saying that based on feedback from Tango... he reported premature rear lockup.

im saying it because i know lots of people locally that have done reardisc conversions, and dont have even bother to change the proportinal valves.
one of them was an 1986 civic with a 1.6 dohc vtec engine. that car didnt came with rear discs, he did a custom conversion on the rear beam, and it felt like a "gokart" after that.

this sounds intresting... what OPEL cars i can seek to get rear disk setup for my lanos?
what did you mean by (felt like a "gokart" after that)?

THE CONVERSION!
so here it is and it's not from an opel. ALL these parts are found in the U.S. and should be in Canada. what i'm building off of is a rear disc setup from a '93 saturn.
the upsides of this conversion is:
you keep 4x100 bolt pattern
you don't need to order repacement parts from Europe
there are rotor upgrades
you keep your track width
it's vertually a dirrect fit
parts are cheep
sealed whell bearing w/ seperate rotor, no repacking bearing with a brake service
hand brake in caliper, no "shoe in hat design" like the nudira
but for all the upsides, and some i've forgoten, there is one down side, you will need to adjust you bolt hole a little but i'll go over that.
here's what you get in my kit. keep in mind what you wiil get is a shotpeened and coated version, these are prototypes.
here's what you need to add to the setup, 8 10mmx50mmx1.25 bolts and lock washers to mount everything using factory nuts, 4 3/8x2'' bolts and nuts for moch-up and all the brake components.
here's were the moch-up comes in, using the 3/8 bolts, mount everything and get it tight. everything should mount flush but these bolts wont be sitting straight, these are just for alignment. the holes are off just slightly, this is when you need to adjust the mounting holes. use a 13/32 drill bit and take off a little from both the bearing and mount until the drill sts staight. do this one by one replacing the 3/8 bolts with the 10mm bolts as you go.
after that your done, you can mount everything else up.
if you've waited as long as i have for all wheel disc brakes or price a setup out of from euro parts then you'll thins this is a beautiful thing.
hopefully someone out there enjoys this!

i forgot to mention, some of the mk2 (wich this is going in) came with the front disc, rear drum setup but still had all wheel ABS. for the lanos with out, i wouldnt worry too much about the ABS, the rear is simply a "trailling wheel" if it were putting out the power or controlled stearing it would be a different story.
over seas this rear beam came with rear drums and ABS as an option, so the parts are out there and if the manufacturor wasn't worried you shouldn't be.
as far as the proportional valves, there isn't one. the proportioning is set from the factory in the master cylinder. these people report "premature rear lockup" most likely cause they set something up wrong or didn't bleed the front correctly.
if you look into any car that offers both rear drums and rear discs the part # for the mastercylinder is the same for both, VW is the perfect example.
however if you are still conserned, you can always use the master from the nubira.
