LT3 Dyno results

Post by GsiTurbo »

Hi guys,

So today was in a way 'the day' - the long awaited dyno testing.

Last year, the car made the following:
173bhp and 240 lbs @ 12psi
Image

This year, the following was changed and/or modified:
- 3" intake
- 3" madrel-bent exhaust
- cometic MLS headgasket
- stronger valve springs
- forged valve followers
- improved P&P of the cylinder head
- F20 gearbox (instead of F16). This gearbox has longer gear ratios, and stronger gears. Also, the power loss on this unit is between 45-55hp.

Test was happening in the following environment:
Temperature: 27 C (79 F)
Pressure: 27.46 in-Hg
Elevation: 2200 ft
RPM limit: 6500
Spark plug: NGK GR5 .040 gap
MSD Master coil
Stock engine management

The initial run at 12 psi generated 185.36 wheel hp and 239.06 lbs of torque with 10 deg base timing. The camgear was set to 0.

2nd run - 1 degree camgear retard:
- 186.78hp / 241.44 lbs

3rd run - 1 degree camgear advance
- 191.16 hp / 240.32 lbs

4th run - 2 degree camgear advance
- 193.19 hp / 245.09 lbs

5th run - 3 degree camgear advance

- 191.41 hp / 246.46 lbs

After this run, the camgear was reset to 2 degrees advance.

Image
193.19 hp / 245.09 lbs at the wheels running 12 psi of boost.

Considering 50hp loss due to the gearbox, the power at the crank is:

243.19 hp and 295.09 lbs. I am estimating this should be good for about 13.8 - 14.4s 1/4 mile run , which is to happen next Friday at the local track.

Wow Tom, thats great. I find it very interesting that you've gained nearly 10hp by advancing the cam.
Are you going to do another dyno session when you fit the throttle body? It'll be good to have some before and after figures for that.

Me too - I took if for a spin afterwards and it felt AWESOME. But, the next dyno run will be with the Fiero TB. There is a concenr with the boost, which is still falling to 8psi at high rpm. I am hoping part of the problem will be eliminated by better intake flow. Otherwise, I might have to get something better-flowing. Then, some larger injectors...the list goes. hehe. Anywho, I will also try to find a stronger wastegate actuator too, as mine is probably leaking at higher boost.

It does sound like the actuator is too weak. You could use what I got from ebay - Garrett 15psi actuator P/N 430099-0017 also known as a -43.
Here's a pic

Try a search on the www.ebay.co.uk there may be some on sale.

Nice run Tom... too bad I was on vacation and missed it.

I take it you did this run in 3rd gear??

How did the F20 gearbox change the 2/3 shift?? Did you get over the 100KPH bump before the shift?

You sure leaned out in the higher RPM's.... I can't tell for sure but it looks like it hit 10:1 near the top end.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that anything under 11.5:1 was somewhat dangerous when running over 8psi of boost ( can't remember who was saying this....made sense at the time.... I think it was from a Mitsubishi Eclipse forum.)

I bet some slightly larger injectors would help out.... especially if your only making 8psi at higher rpm levels.

Hmmmm..... we should hook up an ociliscope to one of your injectors next time you do a dyno run.... then you would be able to see how close you are to a 100% duty cycle.

Hmmm.....I was just wondering if the ECU has any kind of failsafe programing to limit power if the injectors max out at 100% duty cycle????

I am wondering if you had boostleak cuz it doesn't look like it's peaking and dropping off.
how much boost are you running from beginning to end?
