Is my compressor going bad?

Post by azazel19 »

I'm hearing noises from the compressor area. not sure if it's the compressor or the ac belt tensioner pulley. It's a loud shreaking noise that only shows up when the compressor is engaged. any input is appreciated if the compressor is going bad what is needed to repair it i'll be buying the parts and having someone replace it.

Hey azazel19,

Good chance that your A/C compressor is fine.

Sounds like a old, loose belt or a new, loose belt, screeching.
you can tighten it and or replace it, depending on its age.

the belt is under a year old and i've re-tensioned it and when the motor is running and the compressor is engaged the belt doesn't slip but there is a horrible noise similar to a slipping belt.

How old is the A/C compressor ? or better question, How many miles you have on your car ?

Reason I ask is, these compressors are built to last. I met a guy the other day that just replaced his after 225 thousand miles.
We live in the desert around here and pretty much use the a/c year around.

Any chance your year old belt has oil soaked into it ?

another thought ?
Does your A/C still blow cold air ?

Screetching when AC engaged

Post by chefrobert »

I have a leganza. Same story what was causing my screetching was thje lowere crank pulley/harmonic balancer. It looks like 1 piece but it is actually 2 pieces of steel with a rubber laminate between the steel to reduce vibration. When you have your belt off give this a good inspection. Failure of this piece is rare but it happened to me. When you turn on the AC more tension is put on this piece. Good Luck

the ac still blows cold air. the belt has no oil on it and doesn't slip on the pulley i've looked at that it did slip because when i took the belt off to look at it and put it back on i didn't tension it enough it slipped and then i tensioned it back up and then the other shreaking noise. How would I now if the crank pulley was the culprit would it show some sort of slippage or something. also the car is a 2000 lanos hatchback with 78,000 miles on it.

NO !
On the contrary. An oil soaked belt is not what you want. I also don't think "belt conditioning" products are worth using.
First, you have to determine if you need a new belt. If you do ? Install, or have installed a new (dry) belt

azazel19,

I have a 2001 Lanos 1.6 DOHC engine in my 2000 Daewoo lanos car (it's the same engine as yours)

Not sure if the following (quote) applies to our engines.
Someone in this forum may know for sure ?
_________________________________________________________________________
"It looks like 1 piece but it is actually 2 pieces of steel with a rubber laminate between the steel to reduce vibration."
__________________________________________________________________________

The following I do know for sure:
Your a/c compressor clutch may be going.
You may have a bent pulley or a loose one.
You may have a bad bearing in the compressor.
You may have a loose bolt/s on the a/c compressor mount.
You may have a bad bearing on your a/c pulley adjuster/tensioner.
(That tensioner must be torqued to factory spec's. It might not be.)
You may not have your belt adjusted properly.
You may need a new belt.
(A belt can go bad in less than a year if not installed/adjusted properly. A new one will stretch in the first ten minutes of use.)

So, lots of stuff to check, huh ?

Azazel19 ? You maybe further ahead if you take your car and its noisy a/c unit to a reputable a/c expert.

Sorry I can't be of more help but it really is next to impossible for me to diagnose it anymore from here.

Good luck !

:)
p.s. let us know how this problem resolves ?

I've looked at the belt it's in perfect shape, it doesn't slip on the pulley at all. The idler pulley can't tell if it's bad seems to spin pretty freely when the belt isn't on it, and can you get a new one I can't find it listed at www.gm-car-parts.com how would I tell if it's the clutch it only makes noise when the clutch is energized to engage the compressor is there some sort of way to tell I looked at it when it engages seems to not slip or anything.

could be the tensioner of the belt... try to grease it and see.
