Ummmm..... the timing belt is underneath the timing belt cover.... it won't be "easy to see" without removing these black plastic covers.
So........ are you sure your not simply looking at the serpentine belt that connects to all your accessories ?? ( power steering pump, alternator )
the serpentine belt will be about an inch wide and it will have grooves running the length of the belt.
The timing belt is also about an inch wide but it has thick square blocks (teeth) at a 90 degree angle to that of the belt.
Here is a picture of a damaged serpentine belt..... http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?broch ... on_id=3059
This is what your timing belt will look like..... http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?broch ... on_id=3487
If you indeed were mistaken and the cracked belt is your serpentine belt then this is an ideal time for you to drop on an underdrive pulley because it will require a slightly smaller serpentine belt.

Damn precision.....I think you just saved me $ and headaches......!
Im glad I asked despite the embarrassment....I think you're right. The belt I saw is right there next to the engine, visible at plain sight...and it doesn't look like I'm missing the timing belt cover so that was probably it.
This certainly changes things And on top of that, I ended up getting more financial aid, so know I dont have to worry about tuition and have some cash left over! Im one step away from getting the pulley. I just gotta wait for the check
Here, this is the belt Im talking about, http://www.flickr.com/photos/jfz/119812 ... uploaded=1
might be overkill, but Im bored as hell ...and no, thats not my car, I just ripped the pic of someone else. Hope they dont mind...
Anyways, THANKS! I was one second away from dishing $ 170 for a new timing belt kit and waterpump

Ya..... the white "timing belt" is behind that cover..... so the one visible is the serpentine belt... which is the belt that must be replaced when adding the underdrive pulley.
I kind of figured you might be mistaken, taking all the covers off to look at the timing belt is not typically something your average person would do during an oil change.
Now you can take that $170 and use it on an underdrive pulley
Glad to be of help.... chris

Well, thanks to everyone who helped clear my doubts with this topic.
But after all was said and done, I ended up giving 1 grand to my mother to pay off some stuff I owed her and to help out with the bills, and then I used some other money to go skydiving.
Damn its an expensive hobby...$250 for the first tandem jump. But worth every single penny. And of course, since you don't really experience it at first, and they give you a discount for jumping twice on your first day, I ended up going for the second tandem dive for $130. The second time was nuts...I didn't arch correctly on the launch and spun out of control for close to 7 seconds until my instructor sorted it out. I was pale and dizzy when I landed and it made me realize that its not as easy as it looks and that you really need TONS of experience (and some big cojones) to do something like base jumping, which is what I want to do eventually. I cant wait until I have more $$$ to go again and work towards my first solo jump...
So in conclusion..no $$$ left for the pulley . But at least I know what to expect now and if I get a job in the near future, its something I will definitely think about (after jumping out of a plane at 13,500 ft a couple more times, of course )
thanks again
