engine stall in 2nd gear with automatic transmission

HELP HELP HELP!!

04/99 nubira wagon CDX 2.0L. After driving up and down some mountains (4 to 5% steep) with a trailer (400kg) (I don't know if the gearbox became too hot??) my engine stalled when in drive and slowing down from driving speed to a stop. It seems that the gearbox, when selecting 2nd gear, lowers the engine rpm so much, that the engine stalls. The gearbox should go from D to 3 to 2 to 1 (I think).
I unhooked the trailer and tried the gears manually. Reverse and 1st gear worked fine, only when selecting 2nd gear did the engine stall.

Now, 1 week later, the dealer can't read an error code because there isn't one, the other garage doesn't know what the problem is. He now tells me the gearbox should probably get an overhaul, but cannot guarantee that solves the problem. What gives??

Does anybody know of a solution for this problem?

A desperate nubira owner.

my guess would be the extra weight of the trailer put too much strain on the transmission and did alot of wear on the bands. So, the overhaul would probably be the solution...possibly even a complete tranny rebuild.

Welcome madmax2,

Before you spend big money on a rebuild ? It wouldn't cost anything to check the ATF fluid quality and level.
Maybe its over or under filled ? When was it last changed ? etc.....

Check the dipstick (if it has one ?) by smelling for a "burnt' smell. It also should be clear/clean/red.
If it doesn't have a dipstick ? You can still check it. (procedure is in FAQ or How-To and Modifications)

Also ?
Check your owners manual. I don't know about your model car but for the lanos automatic ?
Daewoo does NOT recommend trailer towing of any kind.

there is no dip stick on the 4T40E tranny. i have a fealing that the bands are shot due to the trailers added weight, thats a total bummer.

Thank you all for your input. I am now going to look for a 2nd hand gearbox. Is the 4T40E used in more car brands then Daewoo alone?

I know some chevy cavaliers use the 4t40e...I don't know what years though and I don't know if everything would swap directly over
