Review of Ebay Drilled/Slotted Rotors.

Post by BosnianLanos »

Hey guys, its been a while, but freshman year at UF is pretty demanding. I'll be back more often in the winter, but I just thought I needed to warn you guys.

DON'T BUY THE EBAY ROTORS!

I'd been running EBC Greenstuff pads and the OEM Size Drilled/Slotted rotors for about a year now. At the beginning, things were great. Noticeably better stopping power than OEM, and very straight and smooth stopping. Earlier in the summer, when drives to Gainesville became more frequent, I developed a noticeable wobble upon braking, but nothing bad. Since I was strapped for time, I thought I'd wait till winter break, but with every drive home, the wobble became more and more pronounced, to the point where it was straight scary stopping from speeds above 50. It stopped just fine, but it was still worrisome. Then on a drive Sunday morning I had a car cut me off pretty suddenly and I had to slam my breaks. But rather than lock up, the car just didn't want to stop well. It wouldn't lock up, which I know it should have. So I got home, gave the car time to cool off, took off a wheel, and to no surprise, the rotor was ruined. You could clearly see that it was glazed, almost to a mirror shine, and about a quarter of the drills had suffered hairline fractures on both sides. Not to mention that they were VISIBLY warped. I had the set of rotors that those had been swapped for, and I put them back on the car temporarily, and I don't intend to drive it. I recently ordered a new set of Brembos ($14 on Closeout on TireRack), and new pads to put on during the Thanksgiving weekend.

So, after a year of testing....and I assure you, the brakes did not receive any particularly harsh treatment, nothing that your average "spirited" driver would dish out, the brakes are dead. Save your money and buy the Brembos from TireRack. It could save your life.

Thank you...

OEM replacement is as good as it gets in an iron rotor. Stopping power is all in the pads

If I may add a few cents.... before upgrade to Saab rotors, I went through 3 set of rotors....2 sets (one OEM, one Brembo) developed warpage within 6 months of use with EBC GreenStuff pads. Then, for next year and a half, I ran ceramic aftermarket pads (cant recall the name now)...they provided as good stopping power as EBC, but I never warped the rotors (using Brembo, again). I sort of think that EBC are not all that great, afterall. Quick Google search for string 'EBC pads warpage' show that actually many users do complaint about premature disc warpage when using EBC pads on non-EBC rotors.

There is actually a valid reason for this in that they generate greater heat than most other pads. Should you have a larger brake rotor, all would be well for the given pad size... but our smallish brakes don't do so well. They are phenomenal pads... for bigger brakes and heavier cars. The EBC Yellowstuffs are absolutely brutal but chew through a rotor in about 10,000 miles of surface driving... about 150 of track driving.

I'll continue to use them with OEM rotors but I got the lifetime replacement on rotors from Autozone with this in mind... I just swap out my rotors when they warp through

I just got home for Thanksgiving break, so I'll post pics up shortly.

My new rotors arrived in the mail. Hopefully they'll hold up to the EBC Warpage. And even if they don't...they cost $14.

I've been running EBC Greenstuff pads and those ebay drilled slotted rotors for about 3 years now without any problems.

It is time to replace them now however and I think I'm going with something different.
