Which brand and model did you get?
The wire does not just need a ground.
It requires a series of on/off/on.
What the radio is actually looking for is the signals received of putting the car in park (automatic) then engaging the hand brake (or so I was told by a local car stereo shop).
If your new unit supports it, many have a bypass code that can be entered with the number pad and OK button on the remote control.
This is what I did with my new in-dash DVD player. It now works perfectly, even while driving.
Because it can be distracting, I don't often play a DVD unless it is for a passenger to watch.
Other than that, I just use the unit to listen to music.
Mine is the Dual XDVD8183 http://www.dualav.com/indashvideo/xdvd8183.html
