Im Back....
After a nice long awol, (and a catastrophic failure), Im back with an even meaner plan. The car has sat for the last three months. As in has not even been started and stayed in my garage. But about a month ago I decided to start modifying it again. Started small; such as; new set of rims; new paint, and suddenly I started everything. I ripped out the Power Steering and am in the middle of converting a a nicer manual steering with a breather so its easy to turn in parking lots. Then I decided to take out the bulky Ac compressor that hasnt been used in a year thanks to me ripping out the rest of the unit. So that means I took out the tensioner and all the brackets. That left the next problem to be solved which is how to tighten the short belt? So I am also finishing a alt bracket that allows the alt to be used as the tensioner. Now all I will have running off the crank is the alt. Next on the list is to get a UD pulley from Kinky along with some coilovers from BMS. Also Im waiting to get the Tranny back from Gillece Transmissions from getting valve bodies and some metal treatment so it could hold a lil more power. and I can relax my left foot with this one (read: Automatic). Thats all for now. Ill have pics as soon as I find my Digi cam.
sorry for the long post.

So Ive officially started the wiring. I plan on running a custom harness for the entire car. Now I have two problems, what are the little green blocks on each side fo the car on the frame rails? I looked and looked but could not find any information on them. Also I would like to state it looks like a 5 year old did the wiring for our cars as there is no logikal flow of wires. They all are connected throughout the car in a large one piece harness. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as this is my first custom wiring project in a EFI car.

Sorry I'm not good at wiring so I can't help.
I'm excited to see the outcome though. What are you shooting for power wise? n/a or f/i?
fyi I carry BMS products now too

Wheels or crank?logikal wrote:Power wise Im looking around 325-350 FI. Once the main harness is done I plan on starting to piece together the fuel system once I finally decide on which turb o I want to go with. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I'm eventually going for ~300ft.lbs but going to hold off at 280.ft.lbs untill I do something with my tranny. With 235mm R-compounds I'm affraid 280.ft.lbs might even be pushing it on the track.
Walbro fuel pump and some injectors is all you have to do to the fuel system, unless you wanna convert to a return system.
What are you going to be doing with the car (racing wise)?

I plan on racing in hill climbing events since I am in a city chuck full of them.kinkyllama wrote:Wheels or crank?logikal wrote:Power wise Im looking around 325-350 FI. and yes i do plan on converting to a returnless with full braided lines and a aftermarket tank. the entire factory system will be replaced.
And yes that is at the wheels
Im still researching the turbo, I will have the transmission completely redone and am also going to run a few other goodies which I will reveal once they arrive.exist3nce wrote:Thats quite alot of power, what else do you have planned for the build?logikal wrote:Power wise Im looking around 325-350 FI. The GT28RS is one of the best turbos you could go with, but I don't know anything about hill climb or enough about turbos to know if that'd be the best for you. I'm pretty sure they have one that'll be perfect for what your looking for. I might be able to get you a used one for a really good price; my buddy thinks he has two (he's not sure if the 2nd one is the RS) that I'm going to trade him some parts for.logikal wrote:

Hmmm...the gt28rs is a great turbo but I had one on my Civic and the spool wasnt until about 4k and I need a turbo to spool much quicker then that. Im looking at 3200 at the most. So if I could find a turbo with that sort of spool and can handle my power needs, I would be ecstatic.

What motor was in it? I'm guessing displacement was either 1.6 or 1.8L, and 2.0L in the Optra will spool up quicker than those motors. If you want full spool by 3200rpm (at the latest, as you say), that isn't going to leave much room for top end power. You will have ALOT of torque and wheelspin, but top end will be choked up a bit. You could probably get away with it, but the turbo would be close to maxed out. These motors already have enough torque IMO.logikal wrote:Hmmm...the gt28rs is a great turbo but I had one on my Civic and the spool wasnt until about 4k and I need a turbo to spool much quicker then that. Yes you are correct it was a b18c. The turbo was great for top end power but given I wont be dragging the car too often and during a hill climb torque is your best friend, the 28rs will not be efficient for the events. These cars are great for torque and that is why I want to try them out on the hill. Wheel spin wont be a major problem due to the fact Ill be in 2nd-3rd gear mostly and wheel spin will be irrelevant at that point. I was actually looking at the gt3076r but Im still doing some more research on the topic. Also if anyone knows someone selling a Haltech ECU let me know.

The GT3076R is larger and would be more laggy than a GT28RS, so after what you said I don't know why you would consider that onelogikal wrote: Wheel spin wont be a major problem due to the fact Ill be in 2nd-3rd gear mostly and wheel spin will be irrelevant at that point. How would wheelspin be irrelevant? If you are planning a low and midgrange torque monster, I think wheelspin in 2nd and 3rd would be major consideration. I'm not familiar with these hill climbing events, but if there are corners and turns, you can count on wheelspin with the relatively low speeds, loads of torque and no LSD.
Not trying to knock you here, just my input. I'm excited to see your project get underway

Well from the research Ive gathered even though it is a much larger turbo it is very efficient. full boost would be around 3k unlike the smaller and less desirable gt28rs. I could be wrong but Ive been in cars with 2 - 2.6 liter motors running this motor and it is truly incredible. Also I'm in the same boat as all of you about the hill climbing. from going to events and talking to many experts with years of experience here, Ive heard that corners can be obscenely tight and also some can be very wide. Yes I will be running an LSD but I will need to also figure something else out to help the wheel spin. Thanks for the input existence.

SO Now that it stopped snowing Ive been able to get busy again on the project. I finished almost everything I need to except for removing the transmission. I'm trying to find a f28 somewhere and I have now gone a completely different direction with this build. I plan on building a high compression motor and building a set of ITB's for the car. well Ill let the pics speak for themselves.
By the time you read this the block would have already been sent out to be bored and honed 1mm to allow for a slightly larger combustion chamber. Also the deck will be squared and the the whole thing will be magnafluxed.
The head will receive a full 3 angle valve job, P+P, and oversized 1mm valves.
Not going to be using any of this anymore....
Gotta fill up all those damn holes that I don't need anymore...
Now that is gutted, now there's enough room to start to fab the cage.
The entire will receive one of my custom harnesses, with the inclusion of a Megasquirt standalone ECU. The motor will be running upwards of 12:1 compression and the crank will be knife edged, micro polished, and nitrate treated. And of course all ARP bolts will be used here in.
