i think 100% oil filled dampers are stiffer rather than oil/gas combo dampers.
the shock absorbers are the springs, surrounding the dampers.
just thought i'd add that, because a lot of people think the dampers are the shock absorbers.

Cargo cultism is a beautiful thing as long as you never fall for it.
Yeah he's right, stiffness comes from the springs not the shocks, shocks just take the blow. But oil ones would be better for what you're after i'd say, however mine are nitrogen filled, and my car's lowered 40, the shocks help it not to ground out/wheels rub in rear arches when cornering/hitting bumps int he road, but the stiffness comes from my springs.
I've a brilliant combo, can feel everything in the road but it's no uncomfortable. Give you a real nice road feel aswell as it not shattering your spine driving over every single pebel on the road.

why is it that when people put stiff springs they end up blowing their OEM dampers??

The OEM dampers aren't supposed to recoil fast. Stock Dampers [shocks] are made for comfort for the most part, so they are rated for those standard oem springs. The sudden thump and bounce of a stiffened shock doesnt do standard crappy shocks any good.
If you have a shock lying around, press it down on the ground or something, you'll see what i mean then, it's best trying a good one vs a bad one. Can really see the difference there.
This is the only reason I can see for it being how it is, and the fact they're constantly more compressed if a car's lowered, putting additional strain on them. I dunno, this is what i've always thought was the reason. Could be wrong though.
