my clutch is gone...

Post by Efratech »

after almost 3 years my clutch gave up...

yesterday we took the tranny down and took out the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel

took it to a good clutch shop, they made my current one, so they changed the ceramic pads, and skimmed the the flywheel a bit (ceramic/bronze clutchs "eats" the flywheel, so the did a complete work on it.

as we speak is getting all together.

some cell phone pictures.

Hi Efriam

I see u have a "button clutch" ???

How smooth is it for normal day to day driving???? I was looking at one but some guys told me the clutch would "jerk" and not be friendly to normal traffic driving, but some people CLAIM that their button clutches are smooth??

Also what sort of mileage do you get on a clutch if you say 3 years, and what type of driving dod you do most - highway or town start stop??

It is what we here in South Africa call a "button clutch". The ceramic/copper compound gives excellent "BITE"

It has really mean bite once you let the clutch out and wont slip for nothing in the world when it is working well.

This is used by most serious racers that make BIG power, where most OEM clutch kits would fail/slip

The down side is from what I have been told is that it allows for VERY little clutch slip, and it is not traffic friendly???? :? :?

hi,

well i cant say its as smooth as stock, but does give some vibration... but its drivable.

what i do is use a stock friction plate so the pedal can have a smooth travel, then even with the "on and off action" of the clutch i play a little bit with the clutch do it "slips" a bit on everyday use.

im not sure about how many miles it had, but i do town driving, a lot of stop and go. and drag racing sometimes.

i just picked up the car and with this one, my pressure plate had a bit more pressure applied by the shop and the pedal its a bit heavier than before, but i think i would get used to it.

as you said it puts the power down right away

With every day driving tyres, nothing special, wouldnt that give a lot of wheelspin too easily? Seeing as there's no give at the clutch side of things, wouldnt the tyres be next in line to give?

I wish I could get the chance to drive or feel a button clutch on one of the cars here in SA. If its driveable I would definitally get one - my clutch is on its way out. If I just try and slip it a little under boost it gives and I have to tap off the throttle completely to stop the slip. This is the 4th clutch in 200 000KM......the Mecarm cluth kits I have used work OK( better than any other make I have tried), but I am getting tired of changing them LOL

Sounds good - will have to look at it. I can only get the plate made up once I strip out the clutch kit - not a lot of time on my hands now, but will have to start sometime soon. My car is still driveable at thsi point.

The figures quoted below your replies - is this for an normally aspirated car - the 400m time is VERY good????

This is fantastic time and speed - better than most production turbo cars here in SA. The stock Opel OPC and GTI`s run round 15.6 to 15.8 secs. Have you lightened your car in any way, and you must have a fantastic launch off the line????

Car sounds fantastic. Nice run. My friend had a Supie that he used for 400m - the motor was balanced with all the right goodies, the car was gutted for weight saving and it revved up to 8500RPM. His best time on the 400M was 12.9seconds at sea level running semi slicks - actually it is the same tyres that I am using now at the races.
