Stick it in first or reverse?

Fifth is the easiest gear to turn over afaik.

You sure it's fifth gear?

Why do most people leave cars in first or reverse on hills? I'm tell ya, fifth gear is easier turned over than first.

if you're on a hill stopped, and put it in fifth, come off the clutch and let the car roll, it'll turn the engine over and chug about a lot. If you do it in first, it'll either not turn it over, or be VERY rough.

yeh maybe but at the same time, think about when your going uphill, 5th gear places alot of strain on the engine and u have to downshit while first is real easy to rev through... this must mean their is more resistance in 5th gear... or something like that... u get wat i mean?

I thought that was do to with an engine having more torque and momentum at higher rpms?

Which was why, in a lower gear, at higher rpm, it's easier?

Saying 2k rpm in first will pull you up a hill and 2k rpm in fifth wont is a bit off like, 2k rpm in fifth is trying to move the wheels a lot quicker than 2k rpm in first would.

I see what you mean but here I'm on the other side of the gearbox. I want to hold crankshaft in place, not the wheels. Not a very "mechanic" explanation but I believe 5th is better for doing this job.

I would put it in 1st gear, pull the e-brake and put a block in front of and in back of both the front wheels.
Than after tightening the bolt as much as possible? Put a 1/2 or 3/4 inch (size of socket bar not crankshaft bolt)"breaker bar" on a 6 point socket (that fits the crank-bolt) add a "cheater" (extra length of large diameter pipe) over the breaker-bar.. tighten until you can't anymore, than while holding the bar in place (slight torque) hit it a couple of times with a heavy ball-peen hammer.
should be ok than.

seems with a breaker bar you might get too tight and break the bolt? I mean the bolt has to have a stress limit.
Doesn't it have a specific amount to be torqued too?

Yeah, It does have a torque number and it's a high one (i forgot what it is) an impact wrench is ideal and you can hammer it hard with one
until it wont go no more and than you may have the proper torque.
I think with a breaker bar and a cheater on it you would lift the car off the ground or bend or break the breaker bar before you could do any damage to the high grade #8 (?) crankbolt.
And at that point you probably would be close to the torque an impact wrench will put on it.
just my 2 cent..
