By design the Gasoline engine is at best has a really low efficency.
A hybrid diesel/electric is significantly more efficent.
Fuel cell vehicles are double the efficency of a gas engine.
Basicly the design sucks.... but it's been used for the past 100 odd years because it's reliable.

Very true.
My only point in posting that article is to show that removing the car isn't so bad for the environment after all, well it is, but not much different than leaving it on. In the US removing the cat is illegal anyway, and if they catch you there is a hefty fine. Just trying to throw some more info into the discussion.
However, if your vehicle has 2 cats, if you remove one of them, it is not a problem at inspection, at least in Colorado USA, however in California, it is a differnt matter alltogether. Some cars require the removal of the 1st cat to install a header, and in most states in the US it is legal.
I have no plans to remove any emissions equipment from my Daewoo because as you stated, there is no performance gain to be had from doing this alone.
Well.... I might put a breather with a catch can on the crankcase.
