Coil-over/suspension questions

Post by kinkyllama »

First off I need to get my 3-way adjustable coil-overs softer...the rides so stiff it even hinders performance around a few corners on the track! They are set to the most soft setting and I've played with the rebound to find the best feel. The reason they're probably so stiff is three of the corners are lowered all the way (~3") and the fourth is nearly all the way. So should I have the shocks revalved, get softer springs, or something else??? I've been told different things from different people.

Also I've been told that when you lower the coil-overs themselves the car should come down just as much. For example, if you lower all four coil-overs 1" then the entire car should come down 1". Mines pretty far from that, the car doesn’t even come down half as much as the coil-over. Here is what I measured with the last bit of room I had left to lower them;

Coil-overs were lowered:
FR= .75"
RR= 1.1-1.35"

Car came down:
FR= .35"
RR= .5"

btw I only measured the right side, but the left side was similar. The only thought I have is that with the suspension being lowered so much the sway bars or something similar is holding up some of the weight of the car. Which leads me to another question, I've heard people talking about pre-loading the sway bars. What is that and how does it effect handling?

With a front strut/chassis brace, X brace under the middle of the car, and a harness/chassis bar near the roof of the middle of the car do you think I'd see much benefit from doing a rear strut brace? My chassis is already stiff enough with just the chassis brace that on certain curbs/hill type things I can keep two wheel in the air. :lol:

Thank you,
Danny
