Sunbird GT turbo on an Optra/Reno/Forenza?`
Has anyone been successful in using the turbo from a Sunbird GT, on one of the new 2.0l engines found in the Optra, Reno, and Forenza? I figured that seeing as the engines are from the same family, it should be something that could be done quite easily.

The Sunbird GT Turbo is an 8V head where as the Optra/Forenza/Reno/Optra5 are a 16V head.
As such the Sunbird 8V turbo manifold won't fit the 16V head.... I have both a C20GET (8V turbo) a T22SED (2.2L 16V) and a U20SED (2.0L 16V) so I've been comparing all the internal parts.
I have a 16V cast iron turbo manifold that will fit my Optra 5 on the way.... hopefully it will arrive in the next day or two (cross my fingers)
I got this through 360 Dynamics.... it's not exactly cheap but it should be an exact fit since it was designed specifically for this engine.
It has a T3 flange.... unlike the T25 on the Sunbird 8V turbo manifold.
I had my heart set on a GT28RS but since I'm going to be a "stage 1" test car I will be using low boost and won't be changing any internal parts.
If I ever change out the internals and fix up the engine I will probably design a tubular turbo manifold to fit a GT28RS.... but I have a feeling I will be happy with the "stage1" setup for a while..... especially if I build up the T22SED into a high powered engine.

What PSI and how much HP are you hoping to get?

If your talking about my Optra 5...... I was kicking around the idea of running about 4psi to start as I only have 7000km on the engine.... and then cranking it up to 7psi later on once I get a couple thousand more miles on the car.kinkyllama wrote:What PSI and how much HP are you hoping to get?
A few very knowledgeable friends have told me I won't be happy with 4psi and that I should just go right to 7psi with stock internals.
I guess we will see.... I'm just going to throw on a used T3 on there to see how things fit and overcome any issues with the ECU being unhappy.
