I was thinking about lightening my flywheel

Post by ubuyau »

OK so since my gearbox is going to be out and im replacing the clutch and whatever else is broken... (looking at an exedy/daiking clutch - since none of the shops here have i been able to find a heavy duty clutch for the lanos) im going to get my flywheel machined too. I have been reading a bit on the lightening the flywheel concept and wanted to know if anyone had lightened their flywheel and if its worth it on the woo.

I already have the smaller 1.5L flywheel, so would taking some weight from it make that much of a difference? and how much weight can be taken out without severely reducing driveability?

Also any pictures of the 1.5L flywheel would be great!

EDIT: Im just getting it machined now - spending the extra money on a custom heavy duty clutch since no one makes one off the shelf for the 1.5.

On my 8valve 2.0 ltre engine (JE Camira) in my 15i I had the flywheel lightned by some pro's here in Brisbane.

They removed 0.7kg off the wheel most of that out the edge and around the ring gear. Also had a 2000psi clutch fitted and very happy.

I noticed the difference but the cam is so wild it doesn't idle under 1500 rpm anyway even with the Link computer. But yes very drivable and reves out to peak quicker.

People will quote various amounts.. take it with a grain of salt.

The guys how did mine where spot on with what they recomended and did.

As most people forget.. The Camira is actually the Vauxhall / Opel 'E' that was the start point for the POS Daewoo most people here are driving.

So as most people drive a car with 4 wheels and happy to do that.. some of us go to lengths to modify our cars to perform above average.. dispite what badges are on the front.

So is 8valve 20ltr sitting in a Camira any different to the same 8valve 20ltr sitting in an Vauxhall Astra GTE.?.. some say yes because they are dazzeled buy the shiny lights.. others look deeper and see thay are the same.

The Daewoo 15i is the actual Vaxhall Astra GTE Body that dominated rallying in the late '80's. I'm building a replica Astra Rally car using the 15i body with the Camira/Vauxhall 20ltr running gear and full GTE body kit bought on ebay from the UK..

Ohh and the crappy old Camira 20ltr pumps out 135 ponnies and the car at the moment weights 900kgs and getting lighter by the day.

The Camira is totally under rated. Its the same family of engine as the 1.5 SOHC lanos. I havent looked into seeing if any of the camira parts are swappable with the lanos - as they have performance stuff (cams, pistons, rods, etc) that is cheap as.

I remember reading a series of articles about making a camira go better and they found with CAI, cams and a ECU remap on the 2.0L EFI model that it was seriously pokey!

Something totally unassuming - thats what you want - it makes the snapping so much sweeter

Just back on the thread for a bit, I found just getting the flywheel machined was good enough for the increase of revvyness that i was after. The new clutch is very grippy and springy - makes the car feel alot more torquey.
