Serious starting problems...

Post by patrick3002 »

Hey guys, i was wonder if anyone could help me with my starting problems. I've taken it into the shop twice for this problem and its still a problem! Their excuse was that they couldn't get it to re-inact what i was describing to them. But heres my problem: After my car has been running/sitting idle for awhile say an hour or so (in the city) after its been running or driven for awhile it seems to have serious starting problems. It wil just crank and crank and crank then most of the time it will finally start, it seems like its getting worse though. I have new spark plugs, and spark plug wires, new air filter, new battery, new fuel filter, and my starter is good. I've had a few people suggest having the fuel pump looked at, but i thought i'd get some more advise before i take it back into these people. If anyone can help me out with this i would greatly appreciate it.

My car: 1991 Pontiac LeMans LE 4-door 1.6L 4Cyc

In advance, thanks!

I run into similar problem with my Lemans a little while ago. Doing the following fixed the problem, after replacing the obvious (plugs, wires, cap/rotor etc)

- changed the CTS (coolant temperature sensor)
- installed new vacuum lines

Also, bad IAC and/or MAP will cause similar.

As it turns out, the ECM thought at all times the car is running cold, as a result it was over-fueling the motor and flooding it.

Hope this helps.

no idea... maybe that is different than the sensor of the gauge, i mean their are 2 sensors: one for the ECU (which is supposed to be not working) and the other is just for the gauge on the dash...i think this is what Tom means.
