Another Bad Woo story... Help Diagnose?
Well - it finally happened - after almost dead on 12 months of faithful boosted service she's finally gone.
Compression test verified it
180-0-180-180
From initial diagnosis it seems like blown rings on cylinder two...

I need to get a leakdown test done to verify its rings first... it being Easter and a weekend means everything is shut.
Then I need to research some things and discuss my options with a local engine builder.
I have a shop in mind to do the work - but no one works on Daewoo's so i'll have to be the guinea pig
Im not messing around with building engines myself at this stage...
As for what the rebuild will involve.. im not sure yet... Tuffening sounds good

The Daewoo engines are based on the castings from the Holden/Opel engines..... in fact if you dig into it you will also find that Holden's Port Melbourn engine plant is still supplying a large portion of the 2.0L and 2.2L Daewoo engines (family II engine series ).

You come from the land where Daewoo drivetrains were born.... there should be piles of shops that can help you out.
There is this guy from South Africa that took a 1.6L SOHC Corsa block and bolted on the DOHC 1.6L Daewoo Lanos head.... then he turboed it for something around 275hp..... http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5270

Alot of shops have experience with the Nissan engined Commodores from the mid 80's and the later model V8s - but building GM 4 cylinders just isnt done so much here...
For 4 cylinder engines if its not a Nissan, Honda, Toyota or Mitsu alot of shops will just look at you blankly...
After a bit of thought im figuring something mild and reliable - forged pistons with the stock 9.5:1 compression, rebuild bottom end with stock rods/crank (new bearings/oil pump/etc), ARP bolts/studs. Then run 12psi on Microtech...

What happened:
Was stopped at a crossroads, turned out and came on the accelerator a bit hard, changed to second and it backfired loud/bad a couple of times inbetween the change and then the engine burbled a bit and died.
Here's the facts:
* I have zero compression in cylinder 2. Other cylinders are perfect 180 across the board
* I replaced the spark plugs with NEW ones after it had died and after a few minutes of trying to crank the engine - plugs in 1,3 and 4 were all black and 2 was only a little brown but was a little wet - we couldnt tell if it was a fuel/oil/coolant smell...
* I have lost a good amount (about 1/2inch) of coolant in my header tank while limping it home yesterday (had the idle screw screwed in all the way when we eventually got it to crank) and trying to get it to crank at home. The level had been dropping the TINYEST bit for the past few months...
* I haven't lost any oil at all
* There is no coolant in the oil
* Also there is no oil in my coolant tank either
* Under the valve cover there is no milky coolant oil either
* No wierd mechanical sounds coming from the engine but its definetly missing a cylinder from the sound (sounds a bit like a WRX).
* There was no leaks when i pulled over after it happened and there's no leaks on the ground from having left her overnight and no external leaks around the head/block.
* Top end was rebuilt about 6 months ago (10k kms ago) with new headgasket.
Only thing i had changed that day was to a new fuel filter - but it had been working fine for quite about an hour of driving before hand.
Would a blown headgasket give 0 compression on a cylinder and consume coolant like that without a visible leak on the outside? On start up it would blow a bit of white smoke until it warmed up... and it did a bit more of that in the past few weeks but i thought it may have been to do with overfilling the oil?
Im up for ideas?

well... a bad head gasket could cause a compression leak between the combustion chamber and the coolant passages... white smoak from exhausr supports that but i am not sure if compression has to drop to ZERO.
to make sure if it is a broken ring or not try to put some engine oil in cyl. #2 and try the compression test... if you got pressure (not necessarly up to 180 as the other cylinders) then the oil is sealing a broken ring but if the compression stayed at ZERo then your problem is in the upper half (gasket , head, valves, etc...)

Im going to speak with the shop tomorrow. Either way its getting rebuilt - its about time that the bottom end fails so a bit of a premature rebuild wont be a bad thing. I like going on long road trips in the middle of nowhere where there is NO support at all.... so getting it fixed and reliable is VERY important...

OK then i am more inclined to beleive it is the head gasket... keep us posted with what you find.
