I second the fuel filter, but I also think that if it is not the fuel filter, you may have moisture in the gas.

Before you change your fuel filter, get a bottle of "DryGas" from your local auto parts store. This product is 100% isopropyl alcohol.

The alcohol bonds with the water molecules in the gasoline and allows the water to pass through the engine and leave as steam out your exhaust.

Try the DryGas (or a similar product) first before you change your fuel filter. If the store does not have DryGas, ask them what they have that will get water out of gas.

Every car gets moisture in the gas tank when the temperature changes and water vapor collects inside. Some cars happen to get more than others and some cars can handle higher levels of water in the gas before the engine starts to run poorly.

Also have ur Cam and Crank Positioning sensors checked out. They're an issue with the 1.6L DOHC engine. I was told the same thing to check the fuel filter when mine went bad. And the worst part is the the CEL doesn't come on until they're totally fried.

a couple other things it could be, first vacuum lines may be cracked get a spray bottle with some soapy water and spray all of your vacuum lines with the engine running if you see bubbles then there is you problem. next tps or throttle position sensor it's located on you throttle body it's made of cheap plastic that breaks down under high temp conditions, and last iacv, or idle air control valve. which is also on the throttle body which is most likely your problem. i had some of the same symptoms and i changed the tps, fuel filter, and spark plugs and finally the iac and it runs as good as new.
