Timing Belt & Maintenance Question

Post by SuperDuperDaewoo »

I am at 63,000 miles. I know I need to change the time belt, but what else should I change (an extensive list would be much appreciated).

Can you tell me the best brands for all of the parts I need? Almost nothing has been chaged other than warranty issues I had prior to it expiring (none related to the timing belt). Thank you very much for your help.

Do the water pump...its only a few bucks more and very much worth it. Otherwise you will have to put everything apart again to replace it. In the worst case scenario, seized water pump pulley can rip the timing belt, thus killing your cylinder head.

what car is it and which engine??

basicly you will need:

1- timing belt (Gates)
2- Alternator belt (Gates)
3- A/C compressor belt - you won't need it if it is a 2.0 or 2.2 (Genuine Daewoo)
4- timing belt tensioner (Genuine Daewoo)
5- idler pully - 2 if it is a 2.0 or 2.2 (Genuine Daewoo)
6- water pump (GRAF or Genuine Daewoo)
7- thermostat O ring - if it is a 1.3, 1.4. 1.5 SOHC (Genuine Daewoo)

this is for the parts related to the timing belt job, you can throw in another list of parts for the sake of periodic maintenance such as:

1- spark plugs (NGK)
2- air filter (Genuine Daewoo)
3- fuel filter (Genuine Daewoo)
4- spark plug wires (Genuine Daewoo)

also an IAC, TB and intake cleanup will help much after 63k miles of use.

when timing failed , these cars all have a bad engine, you have to rebuild the cylinder head.
so relpace the timingbelt and tensioner and pulley before 40000 miles
especially, adjust the tension properly, otherwies, it will damage the pulley and finally ruin the timing system

no need to replace the thermostate unless it is causing problems, also you can do the thermostate replacment at any time as it is not related at all to the timing belt job... thats only applicable if it is a DOHC engine.

if it is a SOHC then it is better to replace the thermostate's O ring as it tends to dry out by time and leak coolant, the only way to do that properly is to remove the back plastic cover of the timing belt which in turn requires the removal of the timing belt itself... it is a matter of conveniance.

again it would be much easyer if you told us what car and engine you have.

then you got one idler pulley, separate A/C and alternator belts and you don't need to worry about the thermostate Oring during the timing belt job.
