oil cooler installation and oil temp

Post by MMamdouh »

hi guys

got a friend that installed an oil cooler on a *cough* honda *cough* and he is having some issues

he reported oil temps of 100c at normal driving and 120c when pushing hard... warning light in the oil temp gauge flashed a couple of times when temps got to 120c

oil cooler is installed using a sandwitch adaptor and oil temp sending unit is at the inlet of the oil cooler so readingg we get are for the hot oil going to be cooled, oil flow is from the top to the bottom of the cooler.

now whats the normal operating oil temp for the engine?
why is the oil supposidly so hot?
is the sending unit location right for judging the cooler's performance?
is the oil flow (up to down) right or should we reverse it to allow more cooling time for he oil?
will this reverse have an effect on oil pressure or anything else?

would placement of the cooler effect how well oil was able to flow back to the engine? If the hose off of the sandwich adaptor travels down to the cooler and has to travel back up to get into the engine again it would seem to me that the oil wouldn't circulate and instead of helping cool the oil it would cause the engine to have less oil than what is really needed and the oil would then overheat over a lack of oil in the engine since the oil going into the cooler is basicly just sitting there and not circulating?

just my two cents...I have no other idea what might cause that problem

Try a research for the normal engine oil operating temperature for that vehicle.

Also, is there anyway you could draw (or post) us a picture of the oil cooler plumbing ?

One reason for excessively hot oil would be if the engine is running hot.
Like if the radiator isn't doing its job. Like is the engine generally running hotter than normal ?

outside air flow thru the oil cooler is important too.
